About this job
To gain a Healthcare Science Practitioner (Radiation Engineering) Degree, BSc (Hons) during a 3‑year apprenticeship programme.
The candidate will gain experience and competence in the technical and electrical/electronic engineering support to a radiotherapy service, including scheduled maintenance, repair, calibration and quality assurance (QA) checks of radiation treatment medical linear accelerators and associated equipment.
For the apprentice to be eligible for a full‑time substantive position, the successful applicant must complete the qualification in full and demonstrate competence in the following areas.
The apprentice will be based predominantly at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital but may be deployed to other hospital areas within SATH to gain valuable experience and meet academic programme requirements.
Visits to other hospitals within the region may also be required.
Working hours are
37.5 hours per week over 4 days, Monday to Friday, covering the clinical day 08:00 to 18:00. Please note this is an Annex 21 Training position. Salary details: Year 1 – 65% of the top of band 5; Year 2 – 70% of the top of band 5; Year 3 – 75% of the top of band 5.
The apprentice will carry out the following tasks:
* Aid in the service, repair, calibration and radiation tests of radiotherapy linear accelerators and associated equipment.
* Support in the design and fabrication of custom radiotherapy patient and physics aids.
* Aid in the technical support of the radiotherapy patient management IT system.
* Ensure safe practice for self and others.
* Identification, procurement and fitting of dedicated machine parts.
* Communicate and work effectively with the engineering team, hospital physicists, dosimetrists, and therapy radiographers, and liaise effectively with manufacturers and suppliers.
* Attend training events, courses and seminars as appropriate.
This role does not involve patient handling.
Hospital Transformation Programme (HTP) – Our service will relocate to The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in 2028 as part of HTP. This move will bring specialist services together in a modern, purpose‑built facility to improve patient care and team experience.
Successful candidates will be expected to relocate with the service in early 2028, following a formal change management process with full consultation and support.
