Do you have experience in vehicle maintenance or motor mechanics — and a passion for passing on your knowledge to the next generation?
New Meaning Training (NMT) is looking for a Mechanics Tutor to deliver engaging, hands-on sessions focused on motor vehicle maintenance. This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in practical mechanics who's ready to inspire young people through real-world learning.
Our learners are aged 16–25, many with EHCPs or additional needs such as autism, ADHD, and anxiety. Some have had disrupted education and may lack confidence, but they thrive in supportive, practical learning environments where they can build skills for life and employment.
This is more than a teaching role — it's a chance to make a real difference. You'll work with small groups in a relaxed, non-traditional classroom, using tools, tasks and teamwork to help learners gain qualifications, independence, and a sense of pride in what they can do.
If you've worked in a garage, trained apprentices, or mentored others in the trade — or even if you've never taught before but are patient, empathetic, and hands-on — this could be the career change you've been waiting for. Training and support provided.
* Plan and deliver practical, kinaesthetic sessions focused on Motor Vehicle Maintenance (e.g., basic servicing, diagnostics, workshop safety)
* Support learners in gaining functional skills and AIM qualifications at Entry Level and Level 1
* Build strong, positive relationships with young people, adapting your approach to meet a wide range of needs
* Use trauma-informed, relational strategies to manage behaviour supportively
* Maintain accurate records of learner progress, attendance, and EHCP outcomes
* Collaborate with LSAs and other tutors to share ideas and maintain a consistent, engaging programme
* Create a safe, welcoming environment where learners feel respected, challenged, and motivated
* Work with external agencies, parents/carers, and internal support services where appropriate
New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are an alternative education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 15–25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.
For the 2025–2026 academic year, around 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire will join one of our programmes. Many of these students are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.
Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as "Toolshed." Ten years on, NMT continues to grow, with new centres opening in September 2025 in Nuneaton and Milton Keynes.
We have a range of programmes at New Meaning Training Bucks & Herts: Construction Multiskills, Motor Mechanics, Sports, Hair & Beauty, Computing, Childcare, Catering and Boost Workskills. Not all programmes are available at every location, but all incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials to support our well-rounded approach. We also provide a 'Transition Support' programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.
NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma-Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.
* A solid background in motor vehicle mechanics or workshop environments (formal qualifications not essential but advantageous)
* Ideally, a Level 3 Award in Education & Training (or willingness to work towards it)
* IOSH Working Safely certification (or willingness to obtain it)
* Experience working with young people or in a training/mentoring capacity
* Strong communication skills and a calm, confident manner
* Patience, empathy, and an adaptable mindset
* Confidence with planning and record keeping (training provided)
* Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, SEND, trauma-informed practice, and youth safeguarding
