Purpose of the role
To plan, co-ordinate and deliver effective communication of the Friends of the Earth Scotland’s campaigns to its members, supporters and activists, as well as the media, stakeholders and public audiences as we build a movement of informed people engaged in our work.
This is one year maternity cover post - starting late August/ early September 2025.
Based in Edinburgh (at least 1 day per week) with hybrid working arrangements.
What you'll do
* Ensure the delivery of a high and positive media profile to secure quality and consistent media coverage for Friends of the Earth Scotland, helping to deliver on the organisation’s strategic and campaign objectives
* Contribute to the development of effective communication and campaign strategies, with engagement from the inception stage right through to delivery
* Provide media training, guidance and support for spokespeople
* Maintain positive working relationships with journalists and other media stakeholders, and play part in out-of-hours service
* Develop the use of online platforms for profile-raising, engagement and recruitment purposes, including the website, social media and e-actions
* Create, edit and publish engaging, informative content for the organisation's website, social media accounts and other digital platforms.
* Support key organisational activities such as membership recruitment and fundraising appeals
* Manage supporter engagement, including editing and producing printed members magazine
* Support the effective use of Google Ads, SEO and analyses of online performance
* Work with colleagues on the production of reports, marketing and publicity materials from planning to dissemination
* Contribute to the development of, and uphold, Friends of the Earth Scotland’s visual identity and brand
Your skills and experience
* At least two years’ experience of working in a campaigns, membership communications or press role
* Excellent copywriting and editing skills
* Experience of working with the traditional media
* Understanding of best practice in press and digital communications including supporter email
* Understanding of how campaign groups can make best use of social media
* Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills
* Experience communicating with different audiences across a range of channels
* Experience of understanding and interpreting complex information and communicate it in an accessible, engaging manner
* Ability to prioritise and manage a varied workload to tight deadlines.
* Demonstrable understanding of and commitment to Friends of the Earth Scotland’ values
* Experience of using website content management systems such as Wordpress
* Experience of managing the production of written publications or video by external suppliers
* Familiarity with online campaign platforms such as Nationbuilder
* Strong IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, apps
* Graphic design photo/video editing production skills e.g Canva
* Familiarity with data privacy and GDPR
