At Hill McGlynn, we are pleased to be working with a well-established and respected regional main contractor to recruit an ambitious and proactive Assistant / Junior Buyer to join their procurement team in Maidstone. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with previous buying experience—ideally in the construction sector—who is looking to build a long-term career with a forward-thinking, growing business.
The Role
As Assistant / Junior Buyer, you will support the procurement function across a range of live construction projects, assisting with the sourcing of materials, negotiating with suppliers, and ensuring timely and cost-effective procurement. You\'ll work closely with site teams, project managers, and senior buyers to ensure projects are well resourced and running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
* Assisting in the procurement of construction materials, plant, and equipment
* Liaising with suppliers to obtain best pricing and availability
* Raising and processing purchase orders
* Maintaining and updating procurement records and databases
* Supporting senior procurement staff with tender analysis and supplier negotiations
* Working independently on smaller packages and supplier relationships as you develop
About You
* Previous buying experience is essential (construction sector experience is highly desirable)
* Background in working for either a main contractor or a specialist subcontractor preferred
* Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
* Confident communicator with the ability to build supplier relationships
* Able to work independently and use your initiative to solve problems
* Motivated and keen to progress within a supportive team environment
* Proficient in Microsoft Office and ideally familiar with procurement software
