Job Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a career-minded person to join our Mill Green (Hatfield) team as an Electrical and Mechanical Technician. Focused mainly on electrical maintenance, you will perform a range of front‑line maintenance and operational activities on our sewage pumping stations in the Hertfordshire area.

Working in multi‑disciplinary teams responsible for scheduled, unscheduled and emergency maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment. This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference to Thames Water’s environmental impact and actively help reduce pollution from our sites and networks.


What you’ll be doing

* Investigate plant failures and perform repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible to avoid interruptions to the process. This may involve investigating and diagnosing complex faults, and performing repairs during incidents.
* Install, modify, and commission new plant equipment and diagnose and repair faults in systems and plants.
* Provide technical advice, refer to up‑to‑date technical knowledge, and give training or support for technical trainees if required.
* Work on equipment such as motors, gearboxes, screw/chain conveyors, centrifuges, various pumps, associated control gear, 3‑phase motors, starters, controls, electronic control systems such as VSD, automatic valves, flow, level and pressure measurement, variable speed drives and controls, chemical handling, and dosing equipment.
* Always work safely and comply with all Health and Safety guidance and procedures.


Base Location and Working Hours

Mill Green (Hatfield), AL9 5PE. 38 hours per week, Monday‑Friday, 7:30 am – 3:36 pm. You will also be included in a 1‑week in every 6‑weeks out‑of‑hours emergency standby rota, for which you receive additional payments.


Qualifications and Experience

You should be a time‑served apprentice with significant experience in mechanical/electrical systems or hold an NVQ or C&G Level 3 in mechanical/electrical engineering.

* A problem solver, able to identify potential issues and implement solutions, or escalate if required.
* An excellent communicator, providing technical expertise to internal and external staff and contractors.
* Resilient, able to adapt to the pressures of work and a constantly changing environment.
* Ability to work with minimum supervision, under own initiative, to design and meet standards.
* Knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety issues relevant to the industry.
* A team player who can work in many different teams, showing respect for others, providing helpful feedback and supporting the development of others.
* IT literate.
* Full UK driving licence.

* Be a self‑motivated individual who can immerse themselves in the team. You need to be very disciplined, have the desire to learn from those around you and have a can‑do attitude. This role can be demanding at times, but very rewarding too.
* Take ownership of responding quickly to faults, be curious to understand the problem fully, and identify the best solution to resolve it the first time.
* Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the team.
* Work together as one team, and respect the shared goals.
* Be proactive, take the lead on recommendations and improvements around the site, and communicate effectively.
* Be prepared to be trained in safety procedures.
* Have knowledge and awareness of health and safety standards.

* Offering base salary up to £45,000 per annum, plus standby and overtime opportunity, increasing earnings by a potential £8,000 – £10,000.
