Systems Design Engineer - SCADA
Location: Ashby de la zouch, UK (Hybrid/Office & Site-Based)
Outside IR35
Contract Duration: 12 Months
About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Systems Design Engineer with strong SCADA system engineering expertise to join our rail infrastructure team. This role will focus on requirements definition, system architecture, and interface design, supporting the delivery of complex and safety-critical rail systems.
You will play a key role across the full engineering lifecycle, from requirements capture through to design, integration, and commissioning, ensuring robust and scalable solutions are delivered.
Key Responsibilities
Requirements Engineering
* Lead the elicitation, capture, and analysis of system-level requirements from stakeholders
* Develop high-quality, testable, and traceable requirements aligned with operational and regulatory needs
* Maintain requirements traceability throughout the system lifecycle
* Conduct and lead requirements reviews, ensuring completeness, consistency, and clarity
* Manage requirements change control in a structured and auditable manner
System Design & Architecture
* Lead and contribute to outline and detailed design phases of SCADA systems
* Develop system architectures aligned to operational, safety, and performance requirements
* Ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with enterprise standards
* Produce and review key design artefacts, including:
o System architecture documentation
o Functional specifications
o Design descriptions
o Engineering calculations (as required)
* Support design assurance and formal review processes
Interface & Integration Engineering
* Define and document system interfaces (internal and external), including data flows, protocols, and integration points
* Develop Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and relevant data models
* Ensure compatibility and consistency across subsystem interfaces
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary stakeholders to resolve interface issues and integration risks
* Support integration, testing, and commissioning activities related to interfaces
About You
* Strong experience in SCADA systems engineering, ideally within rail or infrastructure projects
* Proven expertise in requirements engineering, system architecture, and interface design
* Experience producing technical documentation and design artefacts to a high standard
* Solid understanding of systems engineering lifecycle processes and assurance practices
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Desirable
* Experience within rail systems or other safety-critical environments
* Knowledge of integration of legacy (brownfield) and new systems
* Familiarity with industry standards and best practices for SCADA and control systems
