Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology

The closing date is 02 March 2026.

Lancashire Eye Centre would like to invite applications for the post of Speciality Doctor for an initial period of 12 months.

This is an exciting time to be an Ophthalmologist in our Trust and we offer training and experience in a full range of subspecialties for the right candidate including:

* Neuro ophthalmology
* Medical Retina
* Vitreo Retinal


Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide direct clinical care in a range of subspecialties depending on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

Including:

1. Providing direct clinical care in an outpatient setting
2. Undertake laser sessions and macular injection sessions where appropriate
3. Undertaking supervised surgical procedures and providing surgical support in theatres.

The post holder will:

* Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multidisciplinary teams and co-ordinate care for patients within Preston and Chorley
* Assume continuous commitment for care of patients and ensure adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods
* Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by maintenance of continuing professional development

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is in a pleasant part of the country and there are many good places to live. Preston is a dynamic and vibrant city, but the hospitals are also near the Ribble Valley. It is a relatively easy commute either from the edge of Manchester or the edge of the Lake District depending on your preference. The Lancashire Eye Centre is located in the Market town of Chorley which is surrounded by picturesque countryside and approximately 20 miles away from Manchester.

* The opportunity to join a Specialty that provides Ophthalmic care to a local population of approx. 400,000 and a regional population of 1.5 million.
* The opportunity to be support sub specialties with excellent Consultant led training and supervision
* A new designated Eye Unit facility with access to modern ophthalmic technologies
* Support from allied professionals with Senior Nurse practitioners( including Nurse Injectors) and a team of Orthoptists/ Optometrists ( one of the largest in the region)
* An active educational environment with weekly departmental teaching sessions and retinal MDT
* A personal development plan and training opportunities, potential support towards CESR registration.

Qualifications

* Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
* MBBS or equivalent
* Have at least 4 years' full-time Postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least 2 of which will be in a Specialty Training programme or as a Fixed Term Specialty Trainee in Ophthalmology
* Hold a higher diploma e.g. MRCOphth, MRCSEd.
* Hold ALS certification.
* Have some training in teaching methods.


Experience and Skills

* Have equivalent experience and competencies, in relation to qualifications
* Surgical experience, supervised or unsupervised
* Laser clinic experience


Personal

* Good organisation skills.
* Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.


Research and Development

* Evidence of interest in personal development e.g. through research and/or publications
