This role supports our vision by contributing to the upkeep and cleanliness of the hospice building and equipment in accordance with statutory regulations and organisational policy. You’ll maintain a clean and appropriate environment which prevents and controls healthcare associated infections. You will also be responsible for providing a catering service for children and families at the hospice, preparing, cooking and serving food and keeping the kitchen and dining areas to a high standard of cleanliness and tidiness. Main Duties and Key Responsibilities Cleaning Undertake general cleaning duties of any areas of the main hospice building and external buildings directed by the clinical manager or line manager to ensure that all areas are maintained in a clean and tidy condition. Participate in deep cleaning programme as directed by the clinical manager or line manager. Ensure that all waste (including contaminated waste) is transferred to appropriate bins for collection. Identify reduced stock levels of cleaning materials to line manager. Work as part of a team to ensure that cleaning programme is completed. Attend team meetings scheduled by the line manager. Order stores as directed by line manager. Take receipt of and check deliveries of stores as directed by line manager. Catering Reheat and serve food and beverages to children and families in accordance with the menu. Ensure that menus take into account special diets, textures and consistency or cultural needs to suit the needs of different children and their individual preferences. Maintain food stocks as required, including listing and ordering them as required. Check quality and quantity of stock received and notify suppliers of deficiencies. Ensure HACCP’s processes are followed and recorded. Ensure that all work surfaces, floor, crockery, utensils and other kitchen equipment is cleaned, as appropriate, to ensure that the necessary hygiene and health and safety standards are maintained in the kitchen and eating areas. Maintain high standards of health, safety and hygiene and undertake training as required. Understand responsibilities in relation to fire procedure, health and safety, COSHH, infection control, food hygiene, risk assessments and first aid. Health & Safety Carry out duties using safe and appropriate working practices, according to statutory regulations and guidelines, to ensure the safety of self, other staff, children and visitors. Identify to line manager working environments or practice that involve risk or are unsafe and adhere to recommended actions as a result of completed risk assessments. Ensure that all hazardous substances are stored according to COSHH regulations. Wear specified protective clothing as necessary to perform duties. Attend mandatory training i.e. manual handling, COSHH, fire safety, lone worker, and any other training required to ensure safe working practice. General Requirements Your work at the hospice will bring you into contact with children and families, some of whom may be distressed so you might need to offer emotional support at times. You’ll need to be prepared for the emotional impact of working with children with life-shortening conditions – it is likely you’ll have contact with dying or deceased patients as part of your role. Work can be physically labour intensive at times and includes manual handling of equipment, furniture, laundry bags and rubbish sacks. It also involves standing/walking all the time and regular bending. May also involve climbing ladders.
