SEN Tutor – ASD / Autism Specialist

Hours: Term-time, hours to be confirmed with the setting
Cohorts: Year 3 (KS2 / Primary) and Year 7 (KS3 / Secondary)
Reporting To: SENCO / Provision Lead
Role Overview
We are seeking experienced specialist teachers and practitioners to deliver high-quality, autism-informed education and support to young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and associated needs. The role supports a new provision in Peterborough, working across two cohorts – Year 3 (Key Stage 2) and Year 7 (Key Stage 3) – to ensure each learner is able to access an engaging, individualised curriculum within a safe and structured environment.
This is an opportunity to make a real difference to pupils who benefit from a tailored, low-arousal approach, strong relationships, and consistent, evidence-based SEND practice.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons and 1:1 / small-group tuition tailored to the needs of learners with ASD.
* Use autism-informed strategies (e.g. structured teaching, visual supports, low-arousal environments, clear routines) to maximise engagement and progress.
* Support pupils across Year 3 (KS2) and Year 7 (KS3), adapting approaches appropriately to each age group and stage.
* Assess, monitor and record pupil progress against individual targets and EHCP outcomes where applicable.
* Manage behaviour positively and proactively, de-escalating where needed and promoting emotional regulation and wellbeing.
* Work collaboratively with the SENCO, therapists, teaching assistants and families to deliver a consistent, joined-up approach.
* Contribute to a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment, following all safeguarding and SEND policies.
Person Specification – Essential
* Demonstrable experience working with children and young people with ASD / autism in an education or specialist setting.
* Knowledge of autism-informed teaching strategies and SEND best practice.
* Qualified teacher status (QTS/QTLS/PGCE) OR a relevant teaching/practitioner qualification and proven classroom experience.
* Strong behaviour management skills and a calm, consistent, person-centred approach.
* Ability to plan, differentiate and adapt learning for a range of needs and abilities.
* An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one) and the right to work in the UK.
Person Specification – Desirable
* Experience across both primary (KS2) and secondary (KS3) phases.
* Experience supporting learners with co-occurring needs (e.g. ADHD, SEMH, anxiety / EBSA, communication needs).
* Training in approaches such as TEACCH, PECS, Team Teach / positive handling, or similar.
* Experience contributing to EHCP targets, Annual Reviews and statutory outcomes.
