Description

Who We Are:

CloudHQ delivers flexible, efficient, and resilient data center solutions to businesses worldwide. Founded by a pioneer in the data center REIT industry, we design, develop, and operate state-of-the-art facilities in major global markets, setting new benchmarks for scalability, reliability, and operational excellence.

As we scale across Europe, we are seeking an accomplished Controls and Integration Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead the technical design and integration of complex automation and control systems across our regional data centers. This expert will ensure seamless interoperability, optimal performance, and technical compliance across electrical, mechanical, and process infrastructures.

Role Overview

The Controls and Integration SME serves as CloudHQ's technical authority on facility automation, responsible for all aspects of controls engineering, systems integration, and performance optimization for our hyperscale data centers.

This role covers the full lifecycle from concept design and specification through commissioning and operational turnover of supervisory control systems including SCADA, BMS, EPMS, PLC controls, and GOOSE-based protective and communication networks.

The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on technical knowledge of data center systems, including power distribution, cooling, and energy management, alongside proven experience in integrating electrical and mechanical automation under high-availability conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering Leadership:

Lead the design and architecture of data center control systems, including SCADA, BMS, EPMS, and PLC-based subsystems.
Develop integration standards that connect mechanical and electrical assets to centralized monitoring and analytics platforms.
Define network communication structures for OT systems—field bus, IP networks, fiber rings, and redundant comms across facility tiers.
Ensure designs are fully aligned with CloudHQ's global control system strategy and performance standards.
Produce detailed Functional Design Specifications (FDS), control philosophies, and sequence of operations documentation.

Integration & Commissioning

Oversee the integration of multiple control platforms (BMS, EPMS, SCADA, LV/MV controls, and mechanical systems) into unified facility dashboards.
Conduct technical workshops with vendors and contractors to align system architectures and interdependencies.
Participate in and lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and Integrated Systems Tests (IST).
Validate system redundancy, fault recovery, load shedding, and alarm management functions.
Ensure delivery of real-time data aggregation, analytics, and interface to CloudHQ's Operational Technology and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms.

Electrical & Mechanical Controls

Serve as SME for control logic and integration across:
Medium Voltage (MV) Controls: switchgear automation, relay protection, GOOSE messaging, SCADA integration.
Low Voltage (LV) Controls: generator synchronization, UPS interfaces, power distribution management.
Mechanical Controls: BMS system design for cooling, air distribution, water treatment, and environmental monitoring.
Process Measurement & Control: instrumentation, sensor calibration, feedback loops, flow/pressure/temperature control systems.
Implement end-to-end automation strategies ensuring power and cooling redundancy, efficiency, and reliability.

Data Center Infrastructure Expertise

Apply advanced controls engineering across the full technical stack of mission-critical environments, including:
Electrical Power Systems - Utility, MV/LV switchgear, generator sets, UPS systems, and power distribution controls.
Mechanical Systems - Chillers, CRAHs/CRACs, cooling towers, pumps, valves, and environmental conditioning controls.
Building Management Systems - Integration of environmental monitoring, access control, and energy optimization.
Energy & Power Monitoring - EPMS configuration, load trending, fault event diagnostics, and reporting.
Communication Networks - Ethernet, fiber, serial protocols, and redundant switching architectures for real-time control.
Operational Technology (OT) & Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) - Integration into CloudHQ's monitoring ecosystem.

Project & Stakeholder Management

Support regional design, construction, and commissioning teams during project execution.
Coordinate technical reviews, integration workshops, and vendor design submittal evaluations.
Maintain strong collaboration with internal CloudHQ engineering disciplines - Electrical, Mechanical, Networking, and Operations.
Provide technical mentorship and guidance to teams on control system architecture, performance analysis, and commissioning best practices.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

Evaluate emerging technologies related to IoT, AI-enabled analytics, predictive maintenance, and digital twin applications.
Champion standardization and continuous improvement across EMEA data centers.
Develop internal training materials and workshops to raise technical competency and system awareness among CloudHQ teams.

Required Skills & Experience

Minimum 10+ years' experience delivering automation and integration solutions in data center or mission-critical environments (utilities, power generation, or industrial automation).
Deep technical knowledge of:
SCADA, BMS, EPMS, PLCs, and process control systems.
MV/LV protection, control logic, and GOOSE messaging over IEC 61850.
Mechanical system control and instrumentation strategies.
Integration of electrical and mechanical systems using OPC, BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, and MQTT.
Proven ability to lead multi-vendor integration projects from concept through commissioning.
Solid understanding of network design, cybersecurity for OT systems, and data aggregation principles.
Strong analytical and documentation skills for complex control diagrams, narratives, and commissioning reports.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills - able to interface with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary internal teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
Certifications and experience with vendors such as Siemens, Schneider Electric, ABB, Honeywell, or Tridium.
Professional credentials such as ISA CAP, PMP, or relevant automation certifications.
Experience configuring or maintaining Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms.
Deep familiarity with hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data center development projects.

Disclaimer

To be eligible, you'll need to be based in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, or Luxembourg. The role will also involve regular travel across our sites in EMEA.
