This is an exciting opportunity to join the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) Digital Factory as a Modern Apprentice Technician in Welding & Fabrication, supporting advanced manufacturing and research programmes within a world-class and innovative engineering environment.\n\nYou will work as part of the WAAM / DED workshop team, contributing to the manufacture of components and prototypes used in both industrial and academic projects. The role provides hands-on experience operating advanced manufacturing equipment, workshop machinery, and digital tools, while developing skills in welding, fabrication, and modern engineering practices.\n\nAs part of your apprenticeship, you will gain broad exposure across NMIS Digital Factory activities, with the opportunity to develop specialist skills in advanced manufacturing technologies as your training progresses. You will also undertake structured learning through college and on-site training, working towards recognised engineering qualifications while building the skills and experience needed for a successful long-term career in engineering and manufacturing. You will develop a strong foundation in modern engineering and advanced manufacturing, gaining hands-on experience across workshop and digital factory environments, including:\n\n- Operating advanced manufacturing equipment such as WAAM / DED systems\n- Using workshop machinery and hand tools to produce precision components\n- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, including GD&T\n- Understanding materials, manufacturing processes, and fabrication techniques\n- Using CAD/CAM software such as SolidWorks\n- Applying industry best practice, with a strong focus on health & safety\n- Gaining exposure to a range of modern and emerging manufacturing technologies\n\nAlongside this, you will attend college and complete relevant engineering qualifications as part of a structured apprenticeship programme, combining formal learning with practical, on-the-job training. Qualifications:\n\nMinimum of 4 National 5s (or equivalent), including English, Mathematics, a Science and a Technical/ Design related subject.\n\nWhat qualities and skills are we looking for?\n\nWeâre looking for someone with a genuine interest in engineering, manufacturing, and emerging technologies, who is eager to learn and develop practical, hands-on skills.
