Registrar – Care of the Elderly (WGH)
University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) – Weston General Hospital, Grange Rd, Uphill, Bristol – is seeking a Registrar in Care of the Elderly. The post is fixed‑term (20 months), full‑time, starting May 2026 and will close 18 June 2026.
Role Overview
As a Registrar on the Care of the Elderly team, you will provide continuity of patient care on designated wards (Older Persons Assessment Unit, Kewstoke ward, Uphill ward, Draycott ward) and support clinics (movement disorders, TIA, Frailty SDEC, Rapid Access Care of the Older Person). You will work within a 16‑week full shift rota that includes long days, on‑call, nights, twilights and weekend discharge shifts.
Responsibilities
* Continuity of care for patients on Care of the Elderly wards.
* Support clinics covering movement disorders, TIA, Frailty SDEC and RACOP.
* Include on the full shift rota with Specialty Registrars.
* Participate in shadowing period for on‑calls before solo on‑calls begin.
Qualifications and Training
* Full registration and licence to practice with the GMC.
* Minimum 5 years full‑time post‑graduate training (or equivalent part‑time) and at least 2 years paid NHS experience.
* Completion of IMT3 or equivalent.
* MB ChB or equivalent.
* Special interest in a subspecialty in Medicine for the Older Person.
* MRCP membership qualification.
* Clinical skills: temporary pacing externally, access to circulation for resuscitation (femoral or IO), intercostal drain insertion, abdominal paracentesis, NG tube insertion, lumbar puncture, ascitic tap, pleural aspiration, DC cardioversion, and leadership of cardiorespiratory arrest.
Essential Person Specification
* Full registration and licence to practice with the GMC.
* Minimum 5 years full‑time post‑graduate training (or equivalent part‑time) and at least 2 years paid NHS experience.
* Completion of IMT3 or equivalent.
* MB ChB or equivalent.
* Special interest in a subspecialty in Medicine for the Older Person.
* MRCP membership qualification.
* Skills lab competency in required procedures (list above).
* Knowledge of clinical governance and experience of quality improvement work.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care.
* Proven organisational and prioritisation skills.
* Broad IT skillset.
* Current ALS certification or equivalent.
Desirable
* Teaching qualification or experience.
* SCE in Geriatric Medicine.
* Diploma in Geriatric Medicine.
* Member of the British Geriatric Society.
* SIM teaching experience.
* Experience of teaching undergraduates and Allied Health Professionals.
* Management and leadership course.
* Experience as lead for clinical quality improvement project.
* Up‑to‑date GCP.
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
* Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to Medicine for the Older Person.
* Proven ability to organise and prioritise workload.
* Broad IT skills.
* Current ALS certification or equivalent.
Clinical Governance and Audit
* Understanding of clinical governance and individual responsibilities.
* Ability to apply research findings to practice.
* Experience in quality improvement work.
Research
* Experience leading clinical governance research projects.
* Evidence of involvement in research projects.
* Interest in clinical research and application of outcomes.

Commitments
* Full shift rota over 16 weeks.

Salary and Contract
