Overview
Our work at HMCTS is vitally important to the smooth running of a fair, accessible and efficient justice system. We administer criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. We are looking for trainee legal advisers to join our exceptional legal team and develop the skills to provide magistrates with advice on points of law, practice and procedure, and assist with the formulation and drafting of the reasons behind judgments.
As a trainee legal adviser, you’ll work in a fast-paced, frontline role in an office/court base. You’ll be supported and mentored during a two-year training period, gaining experience across case management, liaising with outside agencies involved in specialist court work, and helping courts run smoothly and efficiently. Upon successful training, you’ll have opportunities to develop your legal career within HMCTS.
Responsibilities
* Provide impartial and objective legal advice to magistrates on points of law, practice and procedure.
* Assist with the formulation and drafting of the reasons behind magistrates’ judgments.
* Help conduct case management hearings and liaise with outside agencies involved in specialist court work.
* Work with integrity, empathy and respect to ensure everyone who attends the courts is treated with humanity.
Qualifications and Experience
* You must have passed the academic stage of qualification to become a barrister in England and Wales, or a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales, or a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) or CILEX Lawyer (or equivalent).
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to inspire confidence in others; the ability to speak in court is desirable.
* A commitment to ongoing knowledge of the law, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think on your feet in a busy court environment.
* Flexible, adaptable, with a high degree of personal responsibility; able to remain calm under pressure and maintain a professional, diplomatic approach.
Training and Career Progression
Two-year training leading to a SEO Tier 1 Legal Adviser role (with associated pay progression). The role is subject to successful completion of training and submission of a training portfolio.
Location and Working Arrangements
This role is office/court based. You will be allocated to a work base location agreed with your line manager. The MoJ offers Hybrid Working where business needs allow, with a minimum expectation of time spent in an office (varies by role and local arrangements).
