The General Practice Assistant (GPA) is a new role andprovides a unique opportunity to work in the NHS primary care team andimplement a fulfilling role providing care for the local population alongside ateam of GPs and other clinical and non-clinical members.
The GPA will have a key role in working closely with the GPto support the smooth running of clinics by performing the more routineadministration and clinical tasks on behalf of the GP freeing up their time tofocus on the patient.
They will work collaboratively with the healthcare team tomeet the needs of the patients, supporting the delivery of local policy andprocedures.
Main duties of the job
The GP Assistantwill:
Sort clinical post and prioritise for the GP interms of actions. Signposting documents to others such as clinical pharmacistetc.
Extract all information from clinical lettersthat needs coding and adding to clinical notes.
Arranging appointments, referrals, tests andfollow up appointments for patients
Preparing patients to see the GP, taking abrief clinical history and performing basic assessments in readiness for the GPappointment.
Completing basic administration for the GP toapprove and sign documents such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agencyforms etc.
Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
Helping the GP liaise with outside agenciese.g. contacting the hospital getting hold of an on-call doctor on the phone toask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with theirconsultation(s).
Support the GP with immunisations and wound care.

Organisational Position
Ona daily basis the GPA will report to the Practice Manager and the GP Lead attheir practice.
Individual Responsibilities
Adhere to DHC and GPPractices policies and procedures and any other relevant legislation.
Participatein regular supervision sessions and appraisals with your line manager. Attend trainingand development activities as identified and participate in meetings asrequired.
Maintainadministration systems and workspace used in a clean and tidy condition.
Maintaina good working knowledge of Health and Safety procedures and fire precautionsand operate the correct procedures and participate in policy development anddata collection where appropriate.
Workflexibly to meet the needs of clients.
Ensure mandatorytraining is up-to-date at all times.
Contribute toongoing/new projects as required.
To undertake any otherduties appropriate to the grade and purpose of the job as may be agreed by thepost holder.
Work Setting And Review
The post holder willwork autonomously to an agreed set of targets and objectives.
They will manage theirown time and case load, providing regular updates/progress reports to theirline manager and to the GP practices they are based in.
Participate in DHCsappraisal and review system.
