Robert Half is exclusively partnering with a respected Birmingham-based business to appoint a Financial Controller / Director (No.1) to lead the finance function in a broad and high-impact role. This is a hands-on leadership position offering full ownership of finance, close collaboration with the Managing Director, and the chance to influence performance across a diverse portfolio.
The Role:
1. Leading day-to-day finance operations and month-end close
2. Producing management accounts, board reports, and forecasts
3. Managing budgeting, cash flow, and financial planning
4. Overseeing payroll, VAT, and statutory reporting
5. Partnering with the leadership team to deliver financial insight and commercial support
6. Negotiating key contracts with suppliers and utilities
7. Leading a small finance/admin team
8. Liaising with auditors, banks, HMRC, and regulators
9. Driving continuous improvement and process efficiencies
10. Supporting strategic growth plans and investment appraisals
About You:
11. Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA)
12. Proven track record in an SME environment
13. Strong technical accounting skills with commercial awareness
14. Confident communicator with the ability to engage non-finance stakeholders
15. Adaptable, proactive, and hands-on - comfortable in a varied role
16. Experience in regulated sectors
17. Leadership experience, even of small teams
