Specialty Doctor Doctor in Palliative Medicine

St Barnabas House in Worthing and Martletsin Hove provide specialist palliative care to adults in their localitiesthrough a range of services, including in-patient care and community services.

In June 2024, these two adult Hospicesmerged alongside Chestnut Tree House Childrens Hospice to form SouthernHospice Group.

We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor withan interest in palliative care to join the Southern Hospice Group medical teamon a fixed term (for 1 year) basis and will consider applications for bothfull-time and less than full time applicants.


Main duties of the job

This post would be suitable for specialtylevel doctors, GPs and ST4+ equivalent level doctor No specialist palliativecare experience is necessary provided experience in relevant or alliedspecialties can be demonstrated, e.g. internal medicine, care of the elderlyand general practice. The post willprovide excellent experience for those who want to increase their palliativecare skills appropriate for their ongoing careers.


About us

St Barnabas House is located in Worthing, West Sussex with its catchment area covering Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield. The organisations clinical services include a specialist palliative care in-patient unit (8 beds), a 4-bedded unit for patients who fulfil continuing health care fast track criteria, and a busy community specialist palliative care service, which includes a dedicated clinical nurse specialist team, respiratory and heart failure specific services, Hospice at Home team and out-patient clinics. Our Living Well service is aimed at patients with lower intensity needs and we provide well-being services to patients and their informal carers, and a pre- and post-bereavement service.


Job responsibilities

Thispost forms part of the medical team, which under the leadership of the relevantHospice Medical Lead provides care for patients seen in the specialistpalliative care in-patient and community settings on a day-to-day basis.

Thispost would be suitable for doctors who wish to pursue a career in PalliativeMedicine or for those trained or training in general practice wishing todevelop skills in this area.

Thepost-holders would have an opportunity to further develop their skills in thisspecialist area in a supervised and supported learning environment.

Thepost-holders will be responsible to the relevant Hospice Medical Leads infulfilling the following duties:

The chief responsibility will be the day-to-dayclinical management of patients under the service as needed, whether in thecommunity or on the in-patient unit. This might include domiciliary visits,out-patient assessments, conducting admissions, discharge planning, advancecare planning discussions, venesection, intravenous cannulation. This would bewith the support of the rest of the medical team (senior and resident) and thewider multidisciplinary team.

To communicate with the family of patients andthose close to them as appropriate.

To be responsible for undertaking theadministrative duties associated with the care of patients and theadministration of the department, including writing discharge summaries,organising TTOs, completing the required post-death duties and paperwork, andorganising relevant imaging and other clinical investigations as needed.

The post holders will be expected to liaise withhospital staff, GPs and other agencies involved in the patients care.

The post holders will be expected to work withinSouthern Hospice Group Operational Policies and Guidelines.

The post holders will be required to work on thefirst on call out of hours rota. This will be on a 1 in 5 WTE non-residentbasis.


Person Specification


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Awareness of potential abuse factors and safeguarding mechanisms
* Excellent clinical assessment skills
* Capacity to be alert to dangers or problems, clinical risk and demonstrate awareness of good decision making
* Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors and learning from errors
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
* Excellent organisational skills in relation to time management and decision making
* Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and whole systems approach
* Demonstrates leadership and management of others when needed
* Demonstrable evidence of professional integrity and respect for others: ability to act as a role model and educator, and show high emotional intelligence
* Thorough knowledge of principles and practice of palliative care
* Basic understanding of the roles of non-health agencies and legislative change affecting palliative care services
* Understanding of the direction of the charity sector and the NHS as they relate to palliative care services
* Knowledge of relevant and current national strategy in palliative and end of life care
* Understanding of and commitment to Good Medical Practice
* Understanding of the principles of teaching
* Understanding of concepts and conduct of research in palliative care
* Understanding of the role of governance in ensuring high quality care and safe practice
* Knowledge of risk management
* Ability to use IT and standard Microsoft packages
* Enhanced DBS
* Right to work in the UK
* A valid UK driving licence and the ability to travel across the catchment area for the hospice as required


Qualifications

* Recognised Basic Medical Degree
* Full GMC registration and Licence to practice
* Speciality Doctor: Minimum 4 years full time (or equivalent part time) post graduate training, at least 2 years of which (or equivalent part time) must be as a specialty trainee in a relevant specialty (or equivalent experience and competencies in a relevant specialty such as general practice, care of the elderly medicine, palliative medicine)
* Experience in General Medicine
* Experience of audit, teaching and administration
* Experience in Palliative Medicine


Experience

* Speciality Doctor: Minimum 4 years full time (or equivalent part time) post graduate training, at least 2 years of which (or equivalent part time) must be as a specialty trainee in a relevant specialty (or equivalent experience and competencies in a relevant specialty such as general practice, care of the elderly medicine, palliative medicine)
* Experience in General Medicine
* Experience of audit, teaching and administration
* Experience in Palliative Medicine
