Process Technologist

Derby £42.5k + Package

Purpose of the Role

The Process Specialist is essential to the optimisation of manufacturing processes, facilitating the effective introduction of both new product developments (NPD) and enhancements to existing products (EPD). This role maintains high standards of process capability, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Acting as a technical liaison between product and process development and manufacturing, the Process Specialist ensures seamless transitions, fosters continuous improvement, and aligns operations with business objectives and regulatory mandates. The specialist is pivotal in spearheading process innovations, conducting equipment trials, and enhancing packaging solutions to achieve operational excellence and product consistency. This role is integral in ensuring manufacturing excellence and compliance, driving innovation, and maintaining high standards across product development and production processes.

Key responsibilities

* New Product Development (NPD) Introduction Lead the integration of new product developments into manufacturing, ensuring a smooth transition from development to full-scale production.
* Existing Product Development (EPD) Management Oversee the ongoing refinement of existing products, ensuring adherence to quality standards, operational efficiency, and compliance with customer and regulatory specifications.
* Company and Co-Pack Oversight Manage the processes related to company and Co-Pack production, ensuring execution aligns with established standards.
* Process Capability Monitoring Evaluate and enhance process capabilities, guaranteeing consistent, high-quality outputs while minimising variability.
* Process Efficiency and Improvement Identify and implement strategies to optimise manufacturing processes, enhancing productivity and reducing waste. To also highlight where new raw materials may add value, improve quality, consistency and support processing.
* Product Trials Plan, execute, document and analyse product trials to ensure process feasibility, scalability, and alignment with both commercial and technical requirements.
* Equipment Trials and Standards Conduct trials as part of a multi-functional team to verify that machinery meets operational, hygiene and quality standards prior to full deployment
* Equipment Commissioning Oversee the commissioning of new equipment, ensuring that it meets process requirements and supports long term operational effectiveness. Support with the creation and implementation of relevant paperwork and documentation.
* Process and Product Audits Develop and manage a structured audit schedule, conducting regular audits to promote continuous improvement and that the site adheres to existing approaches.
* Packaging Innovation Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovations in packaging that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and consumer appeal.

Management of Product Files

Maintain and organise comprehensive product files to ensure availability of critical data. The Product File must include (but is not limited to):

* Product Efficacy Results – Verification of product performance and intended use.
* Specifications – Detailed specifications for raw materials and finished products.
* Product Safety Reports – Assessment and compliance with safety standards.
* Claim Test Results – Data supporting marketing and functional claims.
* Nutritional Results – Analysis ensuring compliance with labelling and regulatory requirements.
* Microbiological Results – Microbiological safety and compliance testing.
* Stability & Compatibility Data – Shelf-life and storage condition analysis.
* Registration Requirements (OPSS) – Regulatory documentation ensuring product compliance.
* Previous Trial Reports – Historical trial data for reference and improvements.
* Process Flow / Method of Manufacture – Detailed process documentation for consistency.
* Process Audit Reports – Results of audits conducted during development and scaling.
* CCP/HACCP Review – Identification and validation of critical control points.
* Ingredient, Finished Product & Site Allergen Review – Allergen assessment for raw materials and finished products.
* New Equipment Sign-Off – Verification and approval for new machinery integration.

Person Description – Experience, Technical Skills and Qualifications

Qualifications and Experience

* Strong experience in food manufacturing process management, NPD integration, and process optimization.
* Experience with blending preferably powders.
* Demonstrated success in process audits, equipment trials, and commissioning.
* Expertise in process efficiency improvements and continuous improvement methodologies
* Knowledge of food safety regulations, HACCP principles, and BRC standards.
* Understanding of process capability and manufacturing efficiency techniques.
* Experience with product and packaging development trials.
* Familiarity with regulatory registration requirements (OPSS) and compliance processes.
* Strong data analysis skills to interpret trial and audit results.
