Role Purpose
The Interim Head of Department will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Criminology, Sport, and Public Services curriculum areas. The post-holder will ensure the highest standards of teaching, learning, and assessment, alongside strong student outcomes, staff development, and stakeholder engagement. This role will play a critical part in supporting the college during a period of transition, maintaining stability and driving continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Management
* Provide clear, visible leadership for staff across Criminology, Sport, and Public Services.
* Manage and support academic teams to deliver high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment.
* Lead departmental meetings, communications, and operational planning.
* Ensure effective workload planning, timetabling, and staff deployment.
* Line manage staff, including performance reviews, probation, and professional development.
Curriculum & Quality
* Oversee the design, delivery, and evaluation of programmes within the department.
* Drive improvements in student achievement, progression, and retention.
* Ensure compliance with college policies, awarding body requirements, and external inspection frameworks (e.g., Ofsted).
* Embed inclusivity, safeguarding, and equality & diversity into curriculum delivery.
* Monitor and respond to quality performance indicators, ensuring high standards are met.
Strategic Contribution
* Contribute to the development and implementation of the college’s strategic priorities.
* Identify opportunities for curriculum growth, employer partnerships, and student enrichment.
* Support initiatives that enhance student employability, work experience, and community engagement.
Finance & Resources
* Manage departmental budgets effectively, ensuring value for money.
* Support resource planning, including staffing, facilities, and specialist equipment.
* Contribute to bids, funding initiatives, and income-generating opportunities.
Stakeholder Engagement
* Maintain strong links with employers, industry bodies, and community organisations.
* Represent the department at internal and external events, meetings, and networks.
* Foster collaboration across departments to support cross-college initiatives.
Person Specification
Essential:
* Proven leadership and management experience in a further/higher education or related setting.
* Strong knowledge of curriculum areas: Criminology, Sport, and/or Public Services.
* Track record of improving teaching quality, student outcomes, and curriculum development.
* Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to motivate and develop staff teams.
* Understanding of safeguarding, inclusivity, and equality within education.
Desirable:
* Experience of working with awarding bodies, regulators, and inspection frameworks.
* Experience of building partnerships with employers and external agencies.
* Budget management and resource planning experience.
* A relevant higher-level qualification in one of the subject areas.
