Overview

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal


Professional Duties and Regulations

The duties and requirements align with the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5, including the general and particular duties of teachers.

1. 1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

o (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school;
o (b) if employed by a board on terms under which the teacher is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which they may be required to work as a teacher.
2. 2) Exercise of particular duties

A teacher shall perform, in accordance with directions reasonably given by the principal or board, such particular duties as may be assigned.

3. 3) Planning

1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons; 2. Teaching, according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking of work in school and elsewhere; 3. Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.

4. 4) General

4.1 Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils; 4.2 Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and future careers; 4.3 Maintaining records of pupils’ personal and social needs where appropriate; 4.4 Communicating with parents; 4.5 Liaising with external bodies approved by the employing authority; 4.6 Participating in meetings related to these duties.

5. 5) Assessment/Reporting

Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils as appropriate.

6. 6) Staff Development/Professional Development

6.1 Participating in staff development and performance review; 6.2 Reviewing teaching methods and programmes; 6.3 Participating in arrangements for further training and development; 6.4 Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on course development, materials, methods and pastoral arrangements.

7. 7) Discipline/Health and Safety

Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety; participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.

8. 8) Public Examinations

Participating in preparations for public examinations, assessing pupils for examinations, recording and reporting such assessments, and supervising during examinations.

9. 9) Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration

9.1 Contributing to selection and professional development of staff; coordinating or managing work of other teachers; participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral development; 9.2 Administrative tasks related to duties described above, including management or supervision of support staff and equipment; attending assemblies where required; registering attendance and supervising pupils as needed.

10. 10) Number of days/Hours of work

Details regarding working days (195 days per year for full-time staff, with conditions on teaching time and breaks).

11. 11) Staff cover

Arrangements for supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is unavailable, with conditions by school size and enrolment.

12. 12) Additional notice

Job description subject to review and flexible within guidelines; duties may be assigned that are similar in nature and appropriate to the grade. The post-holder should promote good relations and equality.


Teacher of Art & Design — Person Specification

SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

The following are essential criteria measured at shortlisting and may be explored during interview. Applicants must demonstrate through the application form how they meet these criteria.

* Qualifications/Professional Membership

Hold a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach Art & Design as the main subject.

* Experience

Minimum of 3 months experience teaching Art & Design at Key Stages 3 & 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes; demonstrable experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching; ability to use a range of approaches to support and challenge varied abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs.

* Other

Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post; pre-employment checks.


SECTION 2 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Additional essential criteria measured during interview/selection: knowledge of NI Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection policies, SEND Code of Practice, varied teaching strategies, IT systems and digital tools, and current assessment methods; skills in effective teaching, inclusive environment, collaboration, teamwork, and alignment with the school ethos; evidence of school values alignment; example: school website demonstrates values.


SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Desirable criteria may be used to shortlist; includes experience teaching KS5 Art & Design and involvement in extra-curricular activities (e.g., Art Club).

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity. Enhanced Disclosure may be required; the applicant pays the cost. Further information available from NI Direct or the Department of Justice.
