You’ll step in as a Contract Mechanical Design Engineer, joining a team of 3 current design engineers, driving design activity through to release. This is the critical phase: finalising long-lead component designs, and ensuring the system design is ready for manufacture.
You’ll work across the full lifecycle — from PM-level oversight down to hands-on design and drawing release. That means leading design reviews, challenging assumptions, iterating models, and owning components through DFM.
The scope covers static and fabricated structures, exhaust gas housings, and complex high-temperature assemblies operating up to 950°C. You’ll need the confidence to work across turbine and turbomachinery environments — even if you haven’t been deep in blades recently, that’s fine. The team has three blade designers; what they need now is someone who can strengthen the backend and add value through smart iteration and solid release work.
What you’ll need
* Proven background in mechanical design, ideally with turbomachinery or turbine systems
* Experience designing fabricated or hot-section components (thermal gradients, complex structures)
* NX and Teamcenter experience (strong NX is essential; Teamcenter familiarity is a plus)
* Ability to take designs from concept to release with minimal supervision
* Collaborative mindset — able to interface across design, analysis, and manufacturing
* UK-based and able to attend site as needed (either 2 weeks on-site initially then remote, or 3 days a week in office)
The details
* 6-month contract
* £48–£55 per hour (outside IR35)
* 1 week’s notice either side
* Hybrid or fully remote (with initial on-site period)
Why this role?
Because you’ll be building something that matters — not just another machine, but a piece of technology that could change the carbon footprint of an entire industry. You’ll join a small, expert team (36 people across 4 sites) with deep ties to Rolls-Royce and access to specialists in blade vibration, stress, materials, and manufacturing.
You’ll have autonomy, impact, and a seat at the table where critical design decisions are being made.
