Overview of the job

Job holders will provide faith/belief and pastoral care to prisoners and staff of their own faith/belief tradition and have an understanding/knowledge of other faith/beliefs as part of a multi-faith/belief chaplaincy team. They will also meet the pastoral needs of people of other faiths/beliefs and none.

Summary

The job holder will work with colleagues to ensure the delivery of PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners or its successor policy framework and the broader work of chaplaincy in delivering faith and non-faith-based courses. They will contribute to the process by which the Governor and Chaplain General/Head of Faith Services are assured that these policies are being delivered. They will engage with and build contacts with their own faith/belief community to aid the resettlement of offenders. They should also maintain their own spiritual health and development through time for private prayer/reflection, study and retreat. This is a non-rotational, non-operational role with no line management responsibilities.

Responsibilities, Activities and Duties

* Provide guidance on their faith/belief system in the establishment, providing advice, pastoral care and spiritual welfare to prisoners, staff and their families as requested, liaising with the Faith and Belief Adviser (FBA) or other FBA as appropriate.
* Plan and lead worship/meditation, prayer and faith/belief specific meetings; be part of the provision of available and accessible chaplaincy care at all times.
* Facilitate and deliver opportunities for worship/meditation, study and religious programmes; work collaboratively with other Chaplains, the Managing Chaplain, volunteers and external groups on facilities for worship/meditation and prayer.
* Contribute towards local policy, procedures and practice; provide pastoral care to prisoners and help resolve crises as required; mentor chaplains and volunteers following incidents.
* Nurture Chaplaincy volunteers and promote the scheme within the prison; assist OPV volunteers as required.
* Ensure awareness of faith/belief events and coordinate establishment support; acquire and distribute appropriate literature and materials.
* Contribute to training for staff and volunteers; participate in Faith Awareness Training.
* Represent the chaplaincy team at establishment meetings in the absence of the Managing Chaplain; support ACCT processes; attend boards/meetings and contribute as chair or team member.
* Take on additional roles as agreed with the Managing Chaplain and senior management; forge links with local faith/belief communities and other agencies; contribute to targets and data collection.
* Assist in Probation Approved Premises (APs) and with offenders on release into the community as agreed.

Essential Experience

* Chaplains must meet faith/belief eligibility requirements for their chosen faith as outlined in the Group Profile.
* An ability to fulfil all spoken and written aspects of the role with confidence through English; Welsh language ability may be specified in Wales.

Technical Requirements

Must complete specific training to hold the qualifications required for the area of specialism outlined in the job description.

Faith/Belief Eligibility Requirements (January 2022)

Free Church:

* Free Church chaplains are trained faith practitioners in their own communities, accountable to and accredited by an eligible denomination. They will be a minister (lay or ordained) of a Free Church denomination which is a member of the Free Churches Group or listed by the HMPPS Free Churches Faith and Belief Adviser as an ‘Additional Denomination’.
Denominations listed as an “Additional Denomination” will satisfy criteria including having a distinctive Free Church theology and being national members of Churches Together in England or Cytun, among others.
* Ordained Chaplains will have completed formal professional formation appropriate to their denomination.
* Required qualifications for Prison Chaplains include a formal recognised qualification in theology or religious study, normally to UK university undergraduate diploma standard.
* Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is required and endorsed annually by the Free Churches Faith and Belief Adviser.

Hours of Work (Unsocial Hours) Allowances

* If part time, hours to be confirmed. Unsocial hours working is required and paid at the current rate in addition to basic pay. Unsocial hours are outside 07:00-19:00 Monday to Friday and include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Working Arrangements & Further Information

The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where possible. Some roles may not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Appointments and pre-employment checks will determine location and arrangement. The successful candidate will be appointed to a MoJ office location which may include a Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office.
