The role

Accountable for

  • Ensuring delivery of an outstanding learner experience for learners on defined programmes.
  • Team Leadership of Programme teams, achieving set quality and business targets whilst ensuring that the programmes are fully designed around learner needs and their required outcomes.
  • Providing effective supervision and communication to members of the curriculum team.
  • Designing, planning and implementing modern and flexible curriculum delivery for defined programmes.
  • Teaching and managing student learning, modelling best practice.
  • Associated teaching and learning responsibilities including short and long-term planning and assessment.
  • Responsible for outcomes including Maths and English, high grades and value added for specific cohort.
  • Participation in sharing of best practice in teaching and learning across the Curriculum Area.

Job role

  1. Demonstrate college values in all interactions with learners, colleagues and other stakeholders by acting as an effective role model and challenging non-conformance to college values.
  2. To actively use Aspire to set and monitor objectives and KPI’s and ensure recommendations and arrangements are made for their continuous professional development.
  3. To provide team leadership duties to members of the curriculum team on a range of general day to people management tasks.
  4. Lead and drive forward quality for specified learning programmes by:
    • Team leading delivery teams, ensuring a joined-up effective approach that best meets learner needs.
    • Liaising with employers, sector agencies and other stakeholders to develop learner programmes.
    • Ensuring that delivery staff are deployed and other stakeholders are developed to deliver learning programmes.
    • Ensuring that delivery staff are deployed efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of learners and key stakeholders.
    • Leading IV and assessment by coordinating across programmes of responsibility.
    • Carrying out an effective formal programme review ("Learner Outcome Review") for programmes of responsibility and contribute to self-assessment activity.
    • Produce an improvement plan for programmes of responsibility.
    • Emphasising and tracking outcomes for learners and their progression.
  5. Lead programme teams to implement highly effective systems and procedures that support learners and curriculum delivery:
    • Implement strategies to improve student attendance, retention, achievement and progression rates and meet success rate targets.
    • Implement processes that ensure effective recruitment, induction, attendance, retention, achievement, attainment and progression of learners within each subject/course.
    • Ensure compliance with management information procedures relating to students’ attendance, retention, recording and tracking achievement, progression and learner satisfaction in line with set deadlines.
  6. Practice as an expert facilitator of teaching and learning in a modern and flexible curriculum. This includes:
    • Planning learning activities collaboratively with learners and identifying learning opportunities with maximum impact on learning and positive outcomes for learners.
    • Delivering teaching and facilitating learning to a high standard.
    • Ensuring effective learning and assessment of learners takes place.
  7. Implement assessment approaches that meet the requirements of internal and external agencies:
    • Promoting high levels of achievement and learner progression.
    • Carrying out Internal Verification and Moderation.
    • Carefully tracking and monitoring learner attainment and achievement.
  8. To support Curriculum management in areas of specialist skill.
  9. To oversee the progress of a defined set of learners linked to programmes of responsibility, and ensure they are equipped, supported and motivated to achieve their full potential.
  10. To ensure that individual achievement targets are set with learners and ensure that SMART action plans are created and reviewed.
  11. Manage a devolved budget as appropriate for areas of responsibility.
  12. To participate in continuous professional development and sharing of best practice to attain and maintain outstanding standards of teaching and learning.
  13. Lead development activity to implement programme improvements, working with a range of programme staff and leading curriculum innovation and design.
  14. Lead and engage with colleagues (including Teachers, Learning Facilitators and Learner Support Services) and learners to ensure an outstanding learner experience and outstanding lines of student support.
  15. Demonstrate effective communications with staff and students.
  16. Implement the student disciplinary policy across programmes of responsibility.
  17. Ensure all health and safety obligations are met, ensuring that risk assessments are in place, risks are discussed/communicated to learners every session etc.
  18. To ensure implementation of systems for safeguarding learners and equality and diversity at programme level.
  19. Ensure programme teams have undertaken mandatory staff training.
  20. To deputise as appropriate for a Curriculum Operations Manager.
  21. To undertake any other duties, as required, appropriate to the grade of the post.

  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge and understanding of a curriculum area.
  • Demonstrates excellence as a teaching and learning practitioner in this curriculum area evidenced through consistently high grades in teaching and learning observations.
  • Implements, reviews and refines quality processes and meets targets.
  • Has played a role in the development of high quality programmes that have high/improving success rates and high learner satisfaction.
  • Ensures the delivery of an outstanding learner experience, achieving learner progression & other positive outcomes for learners.
  • Adopts a target-setting approach, setting and monitoring targets for programmes, staff and learners.
  • Leads and participates in sharing good practice in teaching and learning.
  • Leads the effective planning of curriculum delivery and innovation in this curriculum area.
  • Has developed highly effective communication skills.
  • Possesses effective team leading skills; has the ability to lead a team in line with the colleges strategic direction, ensuring that Gateshead College’s standards and values are upheld and maintained at all times.
  • Understands and gives priority to meeting the needs of internal and external customers to provide the highest standards of service, and encourages colleagues to do the same.
  • Very good literacy and numeracy skills and able to develop these skills in others by using diagnostic assessment, setting individual targets and supporting skill development.
  • Has a creative and innovative approach and thinking to curriculum delivery, and able to lead teams in re-design of curriculum.
  • Prepared to use fresh approaches and inspires others to do the same.
  • Drives forward change and responds positively to new initiatives, supporting and leading colleagues through the change process.

Qualifications ,Membership & CPD

  • Possesses a degree or equivalent.
  • Has a Cert Ed/PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status.
  • Fully TEEP trained to level 1.
  • Has ICT skills equivalent to a minimum Level 2 standard.
  • Has very good numerical and literacy skills equivalent to a minimum Level 2 standard.
  • A record of maintaining a high level of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) leading to improvements as a practitioner and for learners.
  • A commitment to develop self and team.

Special requirements

  • 2 References which are satisfactory to the College.
  • Satisfactory medical questionnaire.
  • Enhanced DBS Clearance which is satisfactory to the College.
  • Evidence of qualification certificates.
  • Evidence of Right to work in the UK.
  • Driving for work checks (if required for your role).
