Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder, after training and induction, will be an integral part of the ophthalmic service, ensuring effective maintenance of the patient pathway. They should be able to work independently and as part of a team.
* Provide technical services in the Ophthalmology Department.
* Perform visual fields tests and imaging, including with elderly and children.
* Participate in diabetic eye disease service by performing imaging, including OCT scans.
* Provide ophthalmic photography and fluorescein angiography services.
* Perform biometry.
Knowledge, Training, and Experience
* Knowledge and training equivalent to NVQ/SVQ Level III, demonstrated by qualifications or experience.
* Understanding of hospital policies and procedures.
* Proficiency with keyboard skills for equipment and IPM/EPR systems.
* Complete in-house training on eye anatomy and physiology, achieving departmental competencies.
* External training as appropriate.
* Understanding of visual fields, OCT, ophthalmic photography, and basic eye disease principles.
Physical Effort
* Manoeuvre equipment and patients in confined spaces.
* Assist with patient transfers and furniture adjustments.
* Demonstrate tests and imaging in darkened areas using VDU and equipment.
* Concentrate for prolonged periods and be flexible.
Professional and Personal Responsibilities
* Use of MEH PAS, e-patient, and other software.
* Maintain professional development and knowledge.
* Understand quality issues and initiatives.
* Handle and resolve complaints appropriately.
* Communicate effectively with staff, patients, and visitors.
* Inform the clinical lead/manager of relevant issues.
* Organise workload and ensure accurate patient information.
* Observe practices and suggest improvements.

Person Specification
Knowledge
Essential: Data monitoring skills, experience with digital imaging, computer proficiency, GCSEs including English, Maths, Science, and NVQ Level 3.
Desirable: BSc Hons or equivalent, ophthalmology/eye research background.
Aptitude and Skills
Essential: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, adaptability, ability to work under pressure, analytical skills, organisational skills.
Desirable: Staff management aptitude.
Experience
Essential: Teamwork, public interaction, ophthalmic experience, photographic and IT skills, result interpretation.
Desirable: Experience in a hospital setting.
