About the role
Youth Justice Worker – HMP Wetherby (York Rd, Wetherby LS22 5ED). This role is similar to that of a prison officer but focuses on supporting children and young people in custody.
Location: Wetherby, City/Town: Harrogate, Region: North East.
Start salary: £35,875 per annum for a 39‑hour week (including 20% unsocial). The role is part of a Pass vacancy.
Skilled Worker visa sponsorship may be available for this role, subject to eligibility and in accordance with UK Immigration Rules. Sponsorship is not guaranteed; applicants must maintain appropriate Right to Work in the UK.
Key responsibilities
The main duties include:
* Intervening when required.
* Overseeing and facilitating safe movement around the site.
* Providing supervision to ensure safety.
Applicants will need to pass a DBS check.
Eligibility & Requirements
* At least 18 years old at the point of employment.
* Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
* Pass a medical and fitness assessment (physically active job).
* Meet required eyesight standards in both eyes (with and without corrective lenses).
* Provide suitable standard of hearing (without hearing aids).
* Tattoos are permitted if not offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable, except for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
Salary and Benefits
The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training, you can choose 37, 39 or 41 hours a week, with salaries as follows:
* 37 hours = £33,746 a year
* 39 hours = £35,875 a year
* 41 hours = £38,003 a year
All salary figures include applicable allowances for the role/location.

The assessment pathway is:
1. Complete initial application.
2. Stage 1 online tests (basic judgement and numerical skills).
3. Stage 2 online test (values‑based assessment).
4. Online assessment centre.
5. Medical and fitness test.
Operational Support Grade Role
If you are unsuccessful in becoming a Youth Justice Worker, you may be offered an alternative role as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) based on your performance at the OAC.
