Specialty Doctor (General Ophthalmology & Cornea)

UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF LEICESTER NHS TRUST — Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology (General Ophthalmology and Cornea)

The closing date is 26 March 2026

This is a permanent post in the department of Ophthalmology with a special interest in General Ophthalmology and Cornea for high-volume, low-complexity work within General and Sub-specialty work within Cornea. This post does not include a cataract theatre, although cataract training is supported; it includes a Corneal theatre twice a month with a Corneal transplant surgeon. This is a permanent replacement post intended to enhance the current NHS and academic staff of the Department of Ophthalmology. The post is a service-provisional post but offers training and development support.


Main duties of the job

The successful appointee will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit. They will be required to undertake management duties and work in a multidisciplinary team. The appointee will have a principal interest in General Ophthalmology and Cornea, and will be expected to contribute to the General Ophthalmology, Corneal and emergency service on the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) site and associated community hospitals.

Please note, the job description contains a Job plan, and the final timetable will be discussed and agreed upon on appointment. The service is employing based on room availability and service provision but is flexible where appropriate.

The appointee will join an active and enthusiastic team of 28 Ophthalmologists, 7 Specialty Doctors; generalist and sub-specialist Ophthalmology services are provided within the UHL.

1x Emergency Eye Casualty session per week is mandatory for all posts within Ophthalmology. This post does include Saturday working, although not displayed or required at present. The service reserves the right to include you in the evening on call for the emergency eye casualty department but is not currently required. Evening working is part of almost all job plans in Ophthalmology at UHL but is not currently included in the current job plan.

Applicants must already be on the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of the interview date and have a certificate of completion of specialist training.

As this post is regulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999, The Criminal Justice Courts Act 2000 and/or the Care Standards Act 2000, an enhanced police criminal records disclosure will be requested by the Trust in the event of a successful application. Person Specification


Training & Qualifications

* Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview or Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview.
* Higher academic qualification (fellowship/s) within the subspecialty


Experience

* Adequate training in Ophthalmology
* Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the Job Plan
* Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems
* Demonstrates clear, logical thinking / analytical approach
* Emergency eye casualty experience
* Extensive experience General & Cornea
* Evidence of a special interest in General and Cornea and expertise that complements those of other doctors in the Department
* Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest


Communication and relationship skills

* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that is adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues
* To be empathic and sensitive; capacity to take others perspectives and treat others with understanding
* High standard of presentation both written and verbal
* Demonstrable track record of successful change management
* Proven ability to maintain focus in a demanding environment


Analytical and Judgement skills

* Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills)
* Evidence of management and administration experience
* Management training on an accredited course


Planning and Organisation skills

* Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload

* Able to demonstrate a commitment to and understanding of the importance of treating all individuals with dignity and respect appropriate to their individual needs
