Job overview

An exciting opportunity exists to join the Upper GI Team as Band 6 - Support Nurse. We are seeking an enthusiastic, forward thinking and motivated nurse to join this busy service. The nurse will have the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge of Upper GI cancer management in secondary care and develop key CNS skills in an environment supported by an experienced nursing team.

You will work across the Trust and be supported by a team of CNSs to deliver an exceptional standard of nursing care throughout the cancer patient pathway. You will develop skills enabling you to practice at an advanced clinical level, both in your own clinical practice and as a role model to others as a Upper GI cancer Key Worker.

Working with the Upper GI cancer CNS team, you will support Service development and improve patient experience based on emerging and best practice models of care which is responsive to patient feedback and audit findings.

You will be expected to play a supportive role in ensuring the team comply with local and national policy, clinical governance and Peer review.

Main duties of the job

This post will provide support to the current Upper GI Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists in providing expert cancer supportive care in order to implement National and local clinical guidance and the National Cancer Strategy.

The postholder will be expected to work closely with the Upper GI Clinical Nurse Specialists, the Upper GI Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), the Acute Oncology team, and the Palliative Care team, in order to implement National Guidance, and ensure patients receive the best care.

To be part of an established, integrated cancer and palliative care service that influences care by specialist practice, encompassing advanced clinical practice, education, and evidence based learning.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To act as a resource for the multi-professional teams involved in the care and management of patients with a diagnosis.

To maintain and develop the Upper GI Cancer service, establishing good working relationships with clinicians and other key staff.

To be part of the multi-professional Upper GI Cancer tumor group within the Trust, Network and Region (where required) developing standards of care for patients diagnosed with Upper GI Cancer.

·To provide an effective and efficient service, delivering specialist advice and supportive care to patients who have, or fear they may have, Upper GI Cancer, and their families.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. •Current Registered Nurse with the NMC •Degree in Nurse related specialty or working towards •Mentorship or teaching qualification •Able to evidence recent and continuing professional development relevant to the department

Desirable criteria

2. Masters level study Advanced communication skills training Non medical prescribing

Experience

Essential criteria

3. •Demonstrates awareness of current changes in the NHS – in particular related to Nursing •Post registration experience of working in an acute hospital setting •Experience of managing challenging situations to a positive outcome •Demonstrates success support of a ward/department manager •Evidence of teaching others

Desirable criteria

4. •Experience of managing a team and staff performance •Experience of managing staff capability, conduct and sickness absence at the early stages

Skills

Essential criteria

5. •Ability to prioritise and organise workload •Can effectively use computers and software such as Word/Excel or the equivalent •An ability to remain positive during service changes •Venepuncture and Cannulation or working towards •Competent in all aspects of medicine management

Desirable criteria

6. •Counselling or coaching skills •Knowledge of patient administration systems e.g. PAS
