Role: Assistant General Manager
Full Time: 40 hours a week
Opening hours: 8am – 5pm with some evening events
Salary: £28,000 (plus tips)
Location: The Canteen, The Hotwalls, Old Portsmouth

A fully reliable and dependable support to the GM. To work closely alongside the GM to support in the following areas:
Key Roles and Responsibilities
On the Floor
* Overseeing the smooth, cohesive running of shifts
* Maintaining and developing customer relations as one of the principal ambassadors of The Canteen and CKF
* Managing the operation of The Canteen in coordination with the GM and owners during opening hours and fulfilling delegated tasks
* Handling deliveries and liaising with our suppliers
People Management
* Assisting with the management and support of staff in both kitchen and front of house teams, in conjunction with the GM and Head Chef.
* Maintaining a system of regular one‑to‑ones with your allocated group of team members, turning to the GM and Mental Health First Aider for support.
* Assist in overseeing staff training ensuring all front of house staff have the tools they need to deliver an excellent standard of customer service and ensure this is maintained at all times.
* Ensure all Team Leaders are managed and supported in their roles
Administration
* Responding to customer queries and complaints
* Ensuring FOH stock is ordered as required, organising ordering forms and maintaining good relations with suppliers.
* Organising stock levels of uniform and ordering accordingly
* Maintaining Back of House administrative duties and updating all checklists when required
* Ensuring weekly/monthly deep cleaning duties are carried out to a high standard
* Writing, managing and monitoring staff rotas – adapting quickly to seasonal peaks and troughs. Rota is to be completed at least 2 weeks in advance
* Assisting in managing daily hours sheets, rota changes and record keeping of staff absence.
* Cash handling both during the course of the day and at the end of the shift as required.
* Keyholding and alarm contact
* Assisting in EHO‑related administrative duties particularly monthly Health & Safety Checks, and maintaining regular contact with Ruth Baker, Simply Safer when necessary.
* Ensuring Food Hygiene and cleanliness standards are met and maintained at an excellent standard
* Working closely alongside Kitchen Management and carrying out administrative duties, promoting specials and training FOH staff on any menu changes
* Maintenance management in conjunction with GM owners; day to day issues, developing relationship with key engineers / handymen.
* Ensuring the venue looks and feels warm and welcoming at all times, with appropriate seasonal additions – flowers / candles / blankets etc.
Event Management
* Coordinate and deliver events from enquiry to execution, ensuring clear communication with guests and the team to create seamless and memorable experiences.
* Plan event logistics including layout, staffing, timing, menus, and equipment, working closely with the kitchen and front‑of‑house teams.
* Act as the on‑the‑day host and point of contact, ensuring events run smoothly, issues are resolved quickly, and guests receive exceptional hospitality.
* Review event performance and feedback, identifying opportunities to improve future events and maximise revenue for The Canteen.
