We have an exciting opportunity for a Therapy Assistant to join the Hyperacute Rehabilitation Therapy Team at the John Radcliffe. The successful candidate will work alongside Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech & Language therapists and other Therapy Assistants to deliver high quality patient‑centred care. The post involves working with patients who require intensive rehabilitation; you will support senior colleagues to provide interventions that promote recovery, rehabilitation, and discharge. In addition to clinical duties, you will support the therapy team with general administrative tasks. This position offers the opportunity to work full or part time within the hyper‑acute rehabilitation therapy service at the John Radcliffe Hospital, primarily supporting patients in the Neuroscience ward. You will implement basic therapy assessments and rehabilitation while maintaining accurate records.

Key Clinical and Non‑Clinical Duties

* Understand patient consent for assessment/treatment and ensure valid consent is obtained according to Trust policy.
* Provide patient‑centred assessments and interventions with support from senior colleagues, respecting patient choice and dignity.
* Follow rehabilitative pathways as set by senior therapists.
* Support therapists in setting goals and treatment plans for patients.
* Ensure documentation is accurate and completed in a timely manner in line with Trust policy.
* Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary team members, patients and carers, including referrals to other agencies or localities when care is transferred.
* Provide appropriate equipment to patients with support from senior therapists.
* Ensure essential equipment provision for patients.


Communication

* Establish and maintain effective and professional communication with various individuals and groups in a range of situations and environments.
* Obtain and present information in an accessible manner and raise communication barrier concerns with seniors.
* Motivate patients, carers and other staff through effective verbal and non‑verbal communication skills.
* Record all necessary information in line with established standards and ensure practice of the Data Protection Act according to local policies and therapy specifications.
* Participate in regular meetings with the Therapies service.
* Ensure appropriate liaison with other agencies throughout the patient care pathway, including post‑discharge where appropriate with senior support.
* Positively promote the Therapy service.


Learning and Personal Development

* Use supervision and performance development plans to promote clinical and personal effectiveness and competence.
* Participate in the OUH Trust appraisal process to identify educational needs and create a personal development plan with support from the senior therapist.
* Participate in the in‑service training programme offered by OUH and the therapies team.
* Demonstrate a commitment to development and learning to ensure best practice for the individual, their team and the wider MDT.
* Participate in training sessions within the therapy team with senior guidance.
* Be aware of own limitations and ensure no task or procedure is carried out until necessary training has been received.
* Attend statutory and mandatory training in line with Trust policies.


Health, Safety and Security

* Familiarise yourself with and comply with Trust policies and procedures as set at the end of this document.
* Undertake personal risk assessments when using equipment and when treating patients under guidance from senior colleagues.


Service Improvement

* Work to the values and principles that are encompassed by OUH.
* Assist senior colleagues in statistical reviews, audits and research to support therapy service development.
* Provide comments on proposals and contribute towards service improvement.


Organisational and Planning Skills

* Demonstrate good time management, punctuality, and consistent, reliable attendance.
* Co‑ordinate own working day with guidance from the senior therapist.
* Record departmental statistics and other relevant information as required by the therapy service manager with senior support.
* Understand colleague’s caseloads and offer support when required.
* Work flexibly and adapt to constant changing demands of the working environment, including an expectation to cross cover within the hospital in response to increased demand for service.


Qualifications

* General education to GCSE level or equivalent.
* Good written and spoken English language skills.
* Previous experience of working within a health or equivalent community setting.
* Experience of working autonomously.
* Previous experience of effective team working.
* Knowledge of the roles of the Occupational Therapist, Speech & Language Therapist, and Physiotherapist.


Desirable Criteria

* Formal healthcare qualification (e.g., NVQ 3).
* Completion of care certificate.
