The role
As a Senior Engineering Manager, you’ll have an exciting chance to influence programmes essential to national and international defence, while developing advanced leadership, stakeholder management and technical skills. At the end of the secondment, you will return to one of our UK sites to continue your role, bringing valuable global experience back into the business and advancing your career in one of the UK’s most respected engineering organisations.
Day-to-day, you’ll take on a unique and high‑impact opportunity at the forefront of international naval engineering. You will initially undertake a six‑month secondment to Surabaya, Indonesia, where you’ll become the focal point for planning, coordinating and overseeing complex multi‑discipline naval ship projects. Your leadership will help ensure engineering governance is applied consistently and effectively, shaping safe, reliable, world‑class maritime capability.
1. Leading multi‑discipline engineering teams to deliver complex technical scopes safely and effectively.
2. Managing customer relationships to ensure timely and efficient delivery of project outputs.
3. Approving key technical documentation throughout the engineering design lifecycle.
4. Managing resource planning across recruitment, development and allocation to meet project requirements.
5. Ensuring project and technical audits are completed and driving continuous improvement, with mission system integration on naval platforms considered desirable.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based onsite during the secondment in Indonesia, and upon returning to the UK provides hybrid working arrangements with a minimum requirement of two days per week in the office or onsite.
Essential experience of the Senior Engineering Manager
6. Engineering lead experience overseeing complex, multi‑discipline tasks and projects.
7. Strong knowledge of naval ship design and integration.
8. Experience driving cultural development and positive change within engineering teams.
9. Proven stakeholder management capabilities across internal and external customers.
10. Broad engineering background across design, analysis, specification, safety support, installation and commissioning.
Qualifications for the Senior Engineering Manager
11. Engineering or science degree in a relevant discipline with significant demonstrable experience.
12. Chartered Engineer and member of a relevant professional institution.
