Summary
The job holder will be responsible for providing supervision, knowledge, and skills to prisoners in a specialist workshop to improve their employment prospects on release, aiming to reduce reoffending. They will ensure high standards of service, security, and control, and may teach prisoners towards nationally recognized qualifications, possibly supported by external organizations such as local colleges.
This job description is not for basic assembly or packing workshops; instead, the Production Instructor – Enterprises role should be used. However, on an exceptional short-term basis, supervision of prisoners in basic workshops may be permitted.
This is a non-operational role with no line management responsibilities.
Responsibilities, Activities, and Duties
* Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop/area of work.
* Induct prisoners, training them in health and safety, COSHH, machinery, and tools usage.
* Support prisoners by tailoring learning and training to individual needs.
* Set work schedules, manage targets and quality standards, and ensure contractual delivery.
* Assess and evaluate skills of prisoners to national qualification standards.
* Supervise prisoners, maintain discipline, and oversee performance, motivation, appraisal, and development.
* Maintain communication via radio in accordance with Local Security Strategy.
* Complete assessments, incident reports, security reports, and contribute to incentive reports.
* Conduct searches and security checks on prisoners attending and leaving workshops.
* Log attendance, approve hours and wages, and record piece work where applicable.
* Perform fabric and tool checks, log faults, and undertake machinery maintenance.
* Contribute to prisoner reports, regime monitoring, and training records.
* Assist with risk assessments and material requests to meet work targets.
* Initiate product development reviews to maintain output and variety.
* Participate in self-audits and achieve Service Delivery Indicators.
* Complete administrative activities to support workshop operations.
The above responsibilities are current but not exhaustive. The job holder is expected to accept reasonable additional tasks and modifications, which may require re-evaluation under the Job Evaluation scheme, with prior discussion.
Essential Skills, Qualifications, and Accreditation
Candidates will have or be working towards a Level 3 qualification in their specialist area or possess equivalent experience.
Ability to confidently communicate in English, or Welsh where specified in Wales.
Hours and Additional Information
