HOSPICE NURSE — Permanent Contract
Location: Harrogate (Crimple House, Hornbeam Park Avenue, Harrogate, HG2 8NA)
Hours: 22.5-30 hours per week (24 hours shift pattern)
Salary: £41,179.14 per annum FTE; 45% of hours to be in unsocial hours

Organisation: Saint Michaels Hospice — a local independent charity providing care for people living with terminal illness, bereavement, and mental health concerns. Our services include Herriot Hospice Homecare, Just B, and Saint Michaels Hospice.

What You’ll Be Doing
An exciting opportunity for a registered adult nurse with a minimum of two years clinical experience to deliver high standards of palliative and end-of-life care in a hospice setting. The successful candidate will work on our 10-bedded inpatient unit and collaborate with the MDT to provide excellent patient care. You will receive a robust induction with clinical competencies and ongoing training on in-house study days.
Key activities include:
* Plan and deliver patient-centred care, working closely with patients and their families.
* Act as shift coordinator, overseeing high-quality team nursing care and coordinating wider team care.
* Act as the key worker for a designated caseload, providing nursing leadership within a multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Intervention
* Provide evidence-based, holistic care through needs assessments, care planning, and evaluation of interventions; follow care plans and integrate theory into practice.
* Act as a Key Worker for a clinical caseload and facilitate access to ongoing support; assess information needs and convey information clearly to patients and families.
* Promote self-management through patient education and support.
* Demonstrate advanced communication skills and manage emotional distress for patients and families as needed.
* Offer clinical expertise across service boundaries; refer to other professionals as required.
* Contribute to nursing-led service development and promote clinical excellence through audit and research.
* Maintain accurate patient records.
Leadership And People Management
* Allocate work and oversee delegated tasks; demonstrate leadership through clinical excellence and patient-centred care.
* Support education and training of other healthcare professionals involved in patient care.
* Contribute to service development and the hospice’s governance and quality standards.
* Encourage patient and community involvement; collect data to demonstrate activity, outcomes, and quality.
* Communicate effectively across care pathways and participate in multi-professional meetings; advocate for patients and families.
* Mentor junior staff and students; support training on managing treatment side effects.

Special Features of the Job
Working autonomously within a team; service operates 24/7, 365 days a year. Planned rosters may require short-notice adjustments, managed under the Flexible Working Policy with approval from the service Director. Last-minute shift changes may be necessary to maintain safe patient care.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Essential: Registered Nurse with NMC; Nursing Degree or suitable alternative; prepared to work towards a practice assessor qualification; current practical experience in a clinical setting; ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate nursing care; ability to assess complex patient needs and escalate as required; strong interest in palliative and end-of-life care; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; excellent record-keeping and documentation; IT literate (Microsoft and Outlook); understanding of infection control.
* Desirable: European Palliative Care Certificate or relevant postgraduate palliative care learning; experience leading end-of-life or symptom control care; understanding of clinical audit.
Governance and Compliance
* Disclosure and Barring Service ( DBS ) checks required; post subject to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions Order 1975).
