An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Instructor to join our Tile Barn Outdoor Centre team at Hampshire County Council.
The Role:
Hampshire Outdoor Centres is seeking a Senior Instructor to assist in the delivery and development of Tile Barn Outdoor Centre in Brockenhurst (New Forest) near Southampton. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join Tile Barn Outdoor Centre’s management team.
This is a permanent role and offers a real opportunity for the right candidate to make a significant impact on the development of the centre. Experience of managing a small team is essential, with responsibility for the management of instructional staff. You will need to write and develop outdoor educational programmes for a range of clients with varying needs. Experience of working within budgets is desirable, as is the ability to develop new income generating opportunities.
It is essential you hold the Rock Climbing instructor (RCI), Lowland Leader award and MIAS Level 2 award (or equivalent) plus experience and qualifications in a range of other relevant activities like, archery, Bushcraft, High Ropes (ERCA Rescuer) and PPE Inspections. You will be enthusiastic and able to communicate the real value of outdoor learning to schools and other customer groups. You should have a broad experience of working in the outdoor industry. A full induction and development plan will be put in place for the successful candidate.

What you’ll do:
• Design and deliver engaging outdoor learning programmes for schools, youth groups, and adults
• Lead and support a team of instructors, ensuring high-quality, safe, and inclusive experiences
• Manage risk, resources, and programme logistics across a variety of remote and residential settings
• Act as an on-call manager, ensuring safety and support outside regular hours

• Excellent communication skills for building positive relationships with a diverse range of people, including customers, the participants, professionals and colleagues
• Proven experience of leading and inspiring staff teams, and of delivering staff training, monitoring and mentoring
• Strong communication, planning, and leadership skills
• A personal passion for the outdoors and youth empowerment
• Ability to work with initiative and work independently
• Sound IT skills and able to accurately record information

As this is a 24/7 service, you’ll be required to work a shift pattern to respond to the demands of the service. Your working pattern will include working a weekend a month and a variety of shifts including Friday late’s, and on rare occasions a sleep-in shift as well as some bank holidays for which enhancements will be paid in line with the Hampshire County Council salary policy.
