Main duties of the job
The London Neonatal Transfer Service (NTS) is co‑located with the medico‑surgical neonatal unit at the Royal London Hospital and provides specialist care to neonates transferred between the 26 units in Greater London and beyond. The service is road‑based but air‑capable, providing emergency uplift, palliative care, elective repatriation and occasional round‑trip specialist assessment transfers.
Key responsibilities include:
* Lead and participate in neonatal transfer missions, ensuring safe and timely transport of critically ill babies.
* Coordinate with local and receiving units to prepare and hand over patients, maintaining clinical governance standards.
* Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and service audits, documenting all transfers for debrief and reflection.
* Provide clinical support and advice to colleagues, including on‑call support and educational training.
* Collaborate with the NTS Consultant Neonatologist and other specialist staff to optimise clinical and operational outcomes.
Person Specification
Essential:
* MBBS or equivalent.
* At least 24 months experience at middle‑grade level in paediatrics and 6 months in a tertiary neonatal unit.
* Good communication, teamwork and practical neonatal skills.
* Current UK professional registration.
Desirable:
* MRCPCH or equivalent.
* Previous neonatal retrieval experience.
* ARNI or NLS instructor certification.
