Synnovis is inviting applications to join our ever-growing team of highly skilled Phlebotomists for part-time (20 hours per week Monday to Friday and 10 hour per week, weekends only) posts on our sites at King’s College Hospital (Camberwell), Tessa Jowell Health Centre (East Dulwich) and Princess Royal University Hospital at Orpington.

We would like to hear from people who are keen, enthusiastic, flexible and committed to improving our patient’s experience. To be considered for these roles, candidates should possess excellent customer service skills and be able to demonstrate this during the selection process. Some experience working within the role of a Phlebotomist would be highly beneficial. You must have excellent spoken and written English, be numerate and have first-class dexterity skills.

You will be required to work alongside medical and nursing staff and other healthcare professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team. This role will require you to work in a multitude of locations ranging from wards, outpatients, clinics and community services (including a variety of geographic locations).

You will be required to undertake a range of protocol-driven tasks, working to tight targets and deadlines. These tasks will include being required to handle clinical specimens, accurately record data for quality assurance monitoring procedures, as well as other administrative duties.

Concentration and attention to detail are essential to this role. The post holder will offer a helpful and professional service to all visitors and telephone callers and will assist in the provision of a high-quality service

Please note: If and when required, you will be required to work a flexible shift pattern between 06:30 and 18:00 Monday to Sunday.

Main duties of the job

To collect blood samples from inpatients, outpatients and patients referred to the hospital for blood tests by their General Practitioner or Consultant, within all our sites located within Southwark and Lambeth.

Technical
To comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other patient information.

To use the computer information systems (e.g. Electronic Patient Record, Swiftqueue, EPIC, Positive Patient Identification Systems) as per authorised protocols.

To maintain the integrity and accuracy of computer databases.

Clinical

To adhere to the protocols for the accurate and positive confirmation of the identity of patients prior to drawing blood samples.

To adhere to the protocols for the accurate and positive labelling of blood samples immediately following the collection of the specimen from the patient.

To be responsible for blood samples reaching the laboratories in a timely manner.

To maintain adequate stocks of sample containers and needles on the trolleys and workstations.

To actively pursue good professional working relations with all staff groups on the wards/ outpatient clinics.

To be polite sensitive and professional at all times to the patients, their families and all other hospital staff and colleagues.

Administrative

To assist with record keeping, to ensure compliance with good work practices required for the standards of ISO

To advise the Phlebotomy Senior Management Team when stocks of consumables are approaching minimum stock levels.

To report to the Phlebotomy Senior Management Team any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure.

Other

To observe and adhere to local and national health and safety policies.

To keep the workplace and workbenches clean and tidy.

To maintain good work relations with all members of staff, and to promote effective teamwork.

To treat everyone associated with our Host Trusts with courtesy and respect.

To ensure compliance with all local and national standards of work practice e.g. ISO

To maintain and promote the professional image of Synnovis Pathology, Guy’s & St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital NHS Trusts and Princess Royal University Hospital.

To participate in an annual Performance, Planning and Review process in order to agree/ achieve objectives to support personal development and the department.

To actively undertake supervision, giving accurate feedback on performance using the appropriate paperwork on the day of supervision, of junior staff and students (including external students and medical students).

General

The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in line with the grading of the post. The job description may be subject to change and, if so, this will take place in consultation with the post holder.

Confidentiality

The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and Health Service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act (1984).

The post holder must at all times carry out his/her responsibilities with regard to the Equal Opportunities Policy.

Health and Safety

Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed on them under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), to ensure that agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and employees.

It is the policy to promote health. Smoking, therefore, is actively discouraged and is prohibited throughout the hospital, including offices.

Data Protection Act

All employees must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. In circumstances where it is known that a member of staff has communicated such information to an unauthorised person, those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act (1984) also renders an individual liable to prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London, Blackfriars SE1. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at the Princess royal University Hospital.

Synnovis is a pathology partnership between SYNLAB UK and Ireland, and the NHS, including sites, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to deliver and transform pathology services across South East London.

The partnership provides services to 1.7 million people living in South East London, as well as to hundreds of thousands of patients from outside the region who use local healthcare services.

The partnership provides diagnostics, testing and digital pathology for hospital trusts, GP services and other healthcare providers.

Person specification

Qualifications

* Educated to GCSE level or equivalent. Inclusive of Maths and English
* Understanding of phlebotomy process which requires baseline theoretical knowledge.

Experience

* Proven IT skills in Word, Excel, Outlook
* Participation in quality initiatives such as audit
* Understanding of patient information system e.g. EPIC, Swiftqueue

Skills and Knowledge

* Ability to write accurately and legibly
* Excellent organisation skills and ability to prioritise and organise work
* Good communication skills and fluency in spoken English
* Sensitive to the needs of patients and their phobias, and circumstances
* High standards of customer service
* Able to follow guidelines and protocols
