Inter-Cultural Youth Exchange UK (ICYE UK) was set up in 1993 to promote inter-cultural understanding, peace and cooperation. We believe that local community action can have a global reach and positively affect the world we live in. ICYE UK is part of a federation of ICYE organisations in over 30 countries that promote intercultural exchange and understanding between young people through voluntary placements overseas, including social and environmental projects in a range of countries in South America, Africa and Asia. We believe in the importance of reciprocal exchange and host around 50 international volunteers in the UK every year.
We are now seeking to recruit a motivated Treasurer to replace our current, excellent postholder, who is stepping down from the Board in November. The successful applicant will be co-opted onto the Board as an observer until officially being elected to office as the Trustee Treasurer at the AGM in November 2026. This overlap of terms will facilitate a great opportunity for an extended handover to ensure a smooth transition. As a Trustee, you will be responsible for overseeing the strategic financial direction, as well as the wider governance of ICYE UK, and will work with a dynamic team who support our volunteers every day.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for someone who can:
* Provide support to staff and board in relation to financial matters, including budgeting, tracking actuals, forecasting, and analysis of internal and relevant external financial trends.
* Ensure the financial sustainability of the organisation is considered as part of all decision‑making.
* Report on the finances to membership at the AGM at the end of the year.
* Hold the wider responsibilities and accountabilities as a Trustee of the charity.
The ideal Treasurer will:
* Be able to fulfil the role above in collaboration with others on the board
* Have knowledge and experience of governance and management and an understanding of British Charity law and the role of a trustee
* Have an understanding of British charity and/or company finances, but you do not need to be a trained Accountant
* Be committed and driven by ICYE UK’s values and vision, and committed to understanding the importance of cultural exchange in education and personal development
* Be prepared, at least once a year, to attend our training camps for volunteers in Brentwood, Essex and assist staff in running the camp
What’s in it for you?
Trusteeship is a challenging and brilliant way to volunteer your time and skills to an organisation, build upon your strengths and expand your skillset. Through being a part of ICYE, you will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated and passionate team who are committed to delivering unique volunteering opportunities for young people all around the world. Now more than ever, it is important to build peace and understanding across cultures and through volunteering your time to be part of ICYE’s board, you will help to support this mission. There will also be opportunities to meet some of the volunteers that ICYE supports, so you can see first‑hand the fantastic impact that the organisation has.
ICYE UK is a small charity, which means that Trustees do sometimes have to balance between strategic oversight and accountability, and being a bit hands on.
As an observer, and from November, a member of the ICYE UK Board of Trustees, you will be expected to attend monthly board meetings held online via Google Meet and to chair meetings of the Finance and Human Resources Sub‑Committee which meets monthly for up to an hour online. There will also be at least one Staff/Trustee away day and an AGM each year, which you will be required to attend in person but these events are organised to suit Trustee’s availability.
To apply for this position, please send a letter of motivation and CV and contact details for two references to: info@icye.org.uk by end of Sunday 31st May, 2026. If you would like to find out more, please get in touch. Do look at our website https://www.icye.org.uk/
