This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Cellular Pathologist to join a high-quality, innovative team within our friendly, supportive, and efficient department.
This is a substantive post as part of an approved significant expansion in consultant staffing.
Opportunities for working in various diagnostic areas are available to maintain breadth of practice and meet department needs. An interest in breast pathology and participation in coronial post-mortems are desirable but not essential. We welcome applicants interested in developing their career, particularly in gynaecological cytology, and will support further training and qualifications.
Main Duties
The Consultant Cellular Pathologist will be part of the Pathology Consultant Team based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. They will be responsible for delivering Cellular Pathology Services to the South of Tyne and Wear area and ensuring the proper functioning of the Pathology Service.
Additional administrative duties related to the Pathology Service will be undertaken. The appointee is expected to adhere to the Trust's policies on clinical matters, employment, and personnel, following local and national guidelines.
Workload is distributed fairly among consultants, with most reporting on at least two main specialties, supplemented by diagnostics including biopsies and small surgical specimens. Certain cancer screening pathology specimens are restricted to specific pathologists in line with quality assurance requirements.

Pathology services are consolidated at the state-of-the-art Pathology Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, serving South Tyne and Wear and nearby Trusts. Satellite facilities are available at Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside General Hospital. The service is led by Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, with the successful applicant based at this site.
Pathologists benefit from good IT facilities for remote MDT attendance, departmental electric vehicles, or a hopper service for attending meetings in person. Digital pathology is being introduced gradually.
