Environmental Consultant
Shape Environmental Outcomes Across the UK and Ireland
We are looking for an Environmental Consultant to join our Planning & Environmental team in Belfast. This role will support and deliver a diverse range of environmental assessments and feasibility work across the UK and Ireland. The position is located in a permanent office with on‑site parking, strong public transport links, and easy access to major road networks. Hybrid working is supported, with the expectation of two to three days per week in the office to facilitate mentoring, collaboration and team coordination.
Purpose & Scope of the Role
As an Environmental Consultant you will play a key role in delivering high‑quality environmental assessments, including air quality impact assessments, dust and odour evaluations, and environmental constraints and feasibility studies that inform planning and design decisions. You will support data collection, interpretation and analysis, applying recognised methodologies and using GIS tools such as QGIS and ArcMap to prepare mapping, spatial analysis and technical outputs. You will contribute to the preparation of Construction Environmental Management Plans, ensuring that construction‑phase environmental risks and mitigation measures are clearly defined and proportionate.
Your Impact in this Position
Your work will directly influence the environmental quality and regulatory compliance of development and infrastructure projects across the region. By supporting complex environmental assessments, feasibility studies and the preparation of environmental documentation, you will help clients understand project risks, opportunities and constraints. Your inputs to air quality, dust, odour and feasibility assessments will ensure that environmental risks are identified early and addressed in a proportionate and evidence‑based manner. As you progress, you will deepen your technical expertise across the sectors we serve—including water and wastewater, renewables, residential and commercial development—and contribute to the continued development of the environmental discipline.
Your Toolkit for Success at Tetra Tech
Technical Expertise & Environmental Assessment Capability
You will bring experience in completing air quality, dust and odour assessments, using established methodologies to produce clear and defensible technical outputs. Your capability in environmental constraints work and feasibility studies will enable you to assess development potential, identify key environmental issues and support early design considerations. You will be proficient in GIS, using tools such as QGIS and ArcMap to produce spatial analysis, mapping and evidence‑based environmental reporting. Your experience across water and wastewater, renewables, residential and commercial sectors will allow you to contribute meaningful environmental insight to a broad range of projects.
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
You will be an effective communicator who can engage confidently with colleagues, clients, regulators and other stakeholders. You will be comfortable explaining environmental matters to both technical and non‑technical audiences, ensuring that findings and recommendations are easily understood and actionable. Your professional approach and collaborative mindset will support positive relationships across the business and within multidisciplinary project teams.
Project Delivery & Organisation
You will demonstrate strong organisational capability, managing your own workload and contributing to the coordination of project tasks. You will be able to work to deadlines while maintaining high standards of technical accuracy and reporting quality. Your competence in Microsoft Office applications will support the preparation of clear, well‑structured reports, including environmental statements, feasibility reports and planning‑related documentation.
Regulatory Awareness & Environmental Governance
You will bring an understanding of UK and/or Irish environmental policy, air quality legislation and good‑practice guidance relevant to environmental assessment and development planning. Your awareness of regulatory requirements will enable you to provide appropriate and proportional advice and support clients through planning and environmental approvals processes.
Mandatory Requirements
You will hold a degree in an environmental or related discipline and have previous consultancy experience in environmental assessment or a closely aligned field. You will be proficient in GIS, confident in written and verbal communication and able to produce high‑quality technical outputs.
