The Editorial Manager will oversee the day‑to‑day management of the editorial staffing needs at the Daily Mail and Metro. This role supports the Managing Editor office, building rotas, managing absence via Workday, recruiting, staff appraisals, monthly budget spend, and handling the pressures of a 24‑hour news operation. Office administration, people management, and some journalistic experience are desirable.
The role reports to the Assistant Managing Editor, supports the Associate Managing Editor & Group Editorial Safety Officer, and liaises with senior editorial leadership.
Core responsibilities
* Complete weekly administrative tasks: submit casual and staff timesheets, download, check and update reports, send the editorial weekend staffing list and new starter lists.
* Oversee rotas, drafting and publishing, holiday management, ensuring staffing requirements are met.
* Manage freelance retainer contracts, liaise between group editors, department heads and agents; track contractual changes and expiry.
* Work closely with HR and Finance on contract requests, queries and administrative changes.
* Assist recruitment: oversee job postings, schedule interviews, trial shifts and offers.
* Onboard new staff: process Workday entries, complete contract requests, arrange IT equipment, building passes, right‑to‑work documents, systems training and staff inductions.
* Assist with individual department staffing needs and liaise with heads and HR.
* Organise the Parliamentary team’s attendance at annual party conferences, including hotels, travel, IT support, conference feed‑hire, desk spaces, accreditation and diary.
* Manage Daily Mail entries to industry awards: circulate communications, collate/upload entries, support deadlines, vet entries with senior editors, organise seating plans and invitations.
* Ensure adherence to company policies and serve as point of contact.
* Cover and support wider team in rota/department management and ad‑hoc requests.
* Be on‑call on a rotational basis.
Requirements
* Experience in a multi‑disciplined operations role coordinating teams.
* Process‑driven with strong understanding of workflows and operational processes.
* Excellent communication skills across all levels.
* Experience using cloud‑based software such as Workday.
* Cross‑functional teamwork and collaboration.
* Newsroom experience desirable but not essential.
This office‑based position is located at the Daily Mail’s head office in Kensington, London.
