Overview
We are looking for a humble and capable doctor with an interest in breast radiology to join our highly functional, accomplished, and friendly team.
Team and Department
You will join an existing team of 3 Consultant Radiologists, 1 Consultant Radiographer and a full complement of Advanced Practitioners. The Breast Imaging Department is based on the Burnley General Hospital site.
The department provides a full range of diagnostic and interventional breast imaging services, inclusive of vacuum biopsy/removal techniques and NHSBSP very high-risk screening with MRI plus or minus mammography. The breast service is fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including 4 full field digital mammography sets, 2 with stereotactic and tomosynthesis capability. The service has dedicated breast ultrasound equipment, vacuum biopsy equipment and dedicated breast MRI for very high-risk screening and symptomatic breast imaging. A double-ended digital mammography mobile unit provides breast screening within the community.
The Department provides symptomatic services for 4 Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons with 4 double and 2 single dedicated one stop clinics per week. East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust also hosts the East Lancashire Breast Screening Service providing routine screening for an eligible screening population of 75,000 across East Lancashire, at 10 community sites.
Responsibilities
* The post holder is expected to provide 6 breast imaging sessions and 3 sessions of general radiology per week.
* Provide a high level of competency in breast diagnostic imaging, breast ultrasound including percutaneous interventional breast and axillary procedures.
* There is no on-call commitment for this post.
Department Details
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides a caring service to a population of 550,000 in the Pennine Lancashire area. Services are provided from our two main sites, the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital and from our community rehabilitation wards at Pendle Community Hospital and Clitheroe Community Hospital.
We are a specialist centre for hepatobiliary, head and neck and urological cancer services, robotic assisted surgery, specialist cardiology services and we are also a network provider of Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care. We are a nationally accredited Centre for Endometriosis and Uro-Gynaecology Surgery.
Burnley General Teaching Hospital is the site for the East Lancashire Women’s and Newborn Centre and there is also a midwife-led birthing unit in Blackburn.
Additional Information
There are currently 32 Consultant Radiologists working at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (29.8 WTE) with approximately 313 radiographic and support staff. Each modality has a Lead Radiographer and day to day management of the service is supported by the Radiology Directorate Manager and Radiology Operations Manager. There is an active skill mix programme within the Directorate. Both hospital sites are training departments for student radiographers. There are close teaching links with the Universities of Cumbria and Salford. The Radiology Directorate is headed by the Clinical Director and the Directorate resides within the Division of Diagnostics and Clinical Support.
