Clinical Nurse Specialist – Paediatric Neurosciences

A new post has arisen for an experienced Paediatric Nurse to join our Neurosciences service as a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (0.8 wte). Working predominantly within the Neurodevelopmental Service alongside two CNS and with the opportunity to develop the nursing role within the Neuro‑Disability Service.

The Evelina London Children’s Neurodevelopmental service provides a comprehensive diagnostic and management service for children affected by a diagnosis of ASD/autism.

There are multiple learning opportunities to work with our AHP team undertaking observational sessions within school for ADHD and/or Autism. Working with patients in the feeding clinic to provide ongoing support as an MDT.

Supporting the initiation and titration of ADHD medication, and undertaking nurse‑led medication reviews.

Providing teaching and education for families and staff.

We are looking for an experienced and dynamic individual with excellent communication skills to join our friendly multi‑disciplinary team.

Experience in some aspects of this field and of mental health is required.


Main duties of the job

Evelina London provides care for children and young people from across south London and south‑east England and provides a comprehensive range of hospital services, caring for patients from before birth, through childhood and on to adult services.

As a clinical nurse specialist you will be an integral part of the multi‑disciplinary team working together to deliver this specialist service. You will be responsible for developing and working within evidence‑based specialist pathways of care, guidelines, protocols and patient group directives to support patients and their families to improve care delivery.


Job responsibilities

Clinical and Patient Care

* Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty while working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering specialised individualised and personalised direct patient care.
* Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, including history taking, physical examination and requesting agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
* Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the speciality. Interpret information and take appropriate action and lead others to do the same.
* Act as an advocate for patients within the department, ensuring a patient‑oriented approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
* Ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, taking account of their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
* Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and well‑being of individuals.
* Provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in monitoring the planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised specialist care.
* Be wholly accountable for practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and take every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.
* Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced specialist clinical skills and carry out specialist nursing procedures as required.
* Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and other staff within the clinical environment.
* Ensure that sensitive patient records are stored appropriately and that cultural and spiritual needs of patients are recognised and accommodated within available resources.
* Support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions relating to their treatment and management.
* Participate in case conferences regarding the management of patients, ensuring the coordination of ongoing care.
* Ensure staff take precautions to minimise the risk of cross‑infection in relation to the safe disposal of body fluids (including blood).
* A key member of the multidisciplinary team in supporting patients and their carers during the delivery of bad news or caring for terminally ill patients.
* Assess educational and information needs for patients and families and devise plans to meet those needs.
* Communicate effectively with patients/carers/families regarding disease treatment and management.
* Promote high quality clinical care and assist in the development of the specialist service through evidence‑based practice and clinical standards.
* Provide a seamless, high quality service from referral through to assessment, diagnosis, treatment and review.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register.
* Post‑registration qualification or recent experience in the appropriate area of speciality.
* Leadership course.


Skills

* Proven evidence of management / leadership skills and autonomous practice.
* Ability to clinically lead and influence staff.
* IT skills.


Experience

* Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area delivering effective patient‑focused care.
* Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator.
* Experience of audit, research & evidence‑based care.
