Child Care Officer Residential

Contract Type: Temporary (6 months)
Hours: Full time – 37 hours per week
Pay Rate: £12.22 per hour (PAYE) / £15.66 per hour (Umbrella)
About the Role
The Care Officer (Residential) provides direct care and support to vulnerable children within a residential setting, following agreed shift patterns. The role ensures positive outcomes for children and families by delivering high‑quality care in line with National Minimum Standards, legislation, and organisational policies. Responsibilities include implementing care plans, acting as a key worker, and supporting children’s emotional, physical, and developmental needs.
Key Responsibilities
Provide age‑appropriate advice, support, and guidance to children and families.
Act as a key worker, ensuring daily requirements of placement plans are met.
Deliver residential services in accordance with National Minimum Standards and policy.
Attend and contribute to reviews, meetings, and case conferences.
Maintain accurate manual and electronic records.
Write and submit reports for reviews and meetings.
Plan and coordinate services with internal and external professionals.
Implement care plans, including administering medication.
Lead shifts in compliance with relevant standards and policies.
Prepare meals aligned with dietary and health requirements.Experience & Knowledge
Essential Experience
At least 1 year’s experience working in childcare or a caring role with various client groups.
Experience working as a designated key worker.Knowledge Requirements
Child development (normal and abnormal).
Child protection legislation and procedures.
Disciplinary measures and permitted methods.
Issues relating to race, culture, religion, and ethnicity.
Health education for children (diet, nutrition, lifestyle).
First aid, health & safety, fire precautions, and food hygiene.
The Children Act 1989, Human Rights Act 1998, and related legislation.
National Minimum Care Standards.Skills & Competencies
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Effective communication skills, including with children with disabilities.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Positive behaviour management and safe restraint techniques.
Ability to motivate and engage children and families.
Basic IT skills (advanced IT skills desirable).
Ability to design and implement care programmes.
First aid skills.
Ability to undertake risk assessments.Additional Requirements

Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physically fit to meet role demands, including night shifts and physical activity.
Ability to manage exposure to challenging behaviour, verbal abuse, and emotional trauma.
Must undertake NVQ Level 3 if not already held.Working Arrangements
Flexible working required, including shifts, weekends, bank holidays, and sleep‑ins.
Work involves supervision of children, household tasks, and occasional community visits.
Exposure to unpredictable and challenging behaviour is common.
Must be able to prioritise tasks in a fast‑paced environment.Training & Development
Mandatory training, including restraint, child protection, first aid, and residential care standards.
Ongoing supervision and support from senior staff.
Opportunities for skill development, including specialist child‑care approaches.
