Data Engineer
. This permanent role is an excellent opportunity to join a forward-thinking IT Data team, supporting global Advanced Analytics (AA) initiatives and driving data-led decision making across the business.
The Role
The
Data Engineer
will be responsible for designing and implementing scalable data solutions, building and maintaining pipelines, and ensuring data availability for Advanced Analytics projects. You will work closely with business stakeholders, data scientists, engineers, and IT teams to develop and deploy robust infrastructures, modernize legacy systems, and deliver high-quality, production-ready code that supports the organisation's strategic data goals.
Main Duties
* Build, maintain, and optimize end-to-end data pipelines that acquire, ingest, and process data from multiple sources into Big Data platforms, ensuring data availability and accessibility for AA initiatives.
* Collaborate with business owners and subject matter experts to model data landscapes, secure data exchanges, and implement effective data integration strategies.
* Design and manage data environments in the Cloud, with a strong emphasis on AWS, ensuring scalability, performance, and security.
* Leverage distributed processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark, Hadoop, Amazon Glue) and multiple database technologies (e.g., traditional RDBMS, NoSQL, MPP) to build a robust data infrastructure.
* Work closely with data scientists, engineers, and IT to curate, wrangle, and prepare data for advanced analytical models.
* Help derive and continuously refine AA guidelines and standards by synthesizing learnings from prioritized initiatives ("learning while doing and driving impact").
* Ensure compliance with data security and privacy standards, reflecting a strong understanding of Information Security principles.
* Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior data engineers, fostering collaboration between business and technical teams.
* Stay updated with emerging data technologies and methodologies, integrating innovative practices into AA initiatives.
Qualifications & Person Specification
* Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., applied mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, applied statistics).
* At least 3 years' experience in data engineering or related roles within large companies, ideally in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals.
* Solid experience working across the full data lifecycle.
* Experience with real-time and sensor data (desirable).
* Proven ability to work with structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, identifying linkages across disparate data sets.
* Strong experience in multiple database technologies such as:
* Distributed Processing (Spark, Hadoop, EMR, Amazon Glue)
* Traditional RDBMS (MS SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
* MPP (AWS Redshift, Teradata)
* NoSQL (MongoDB, Amazon DynamoDB, Cassandra, Neo4J, Amazon Athena)
* Programming experience in Python, Java, or Scala.
* Demonstrated experience in ensuring data security and compliance for sensitive data.
* Good understanding of software engineering principles.
* Knowledge of testing frameworks and libraries.
* Strong experience and interest in Cloud platforms, particularly AWS.
* Excellent problem-solving skills, with a results-driven and creative approach.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
* Intrinsic motivation to mentor and make Advanced Analytics accessible to a wider group of stakeholders.
* Ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams, bridging business and data science needs (consultancy experience a plus).
