National Grid is hiring a Policy Development Analyst (Commercial) - This position is based from our Warwick or London office, travel to both may be expected on occassion. We can offer flexible hybrid working options.
Job Purpose
As a core member in the Commercial Policy Team, you will represent technical interests of National Grid Electricity Transmission at industry code workgroups and panels, often dealing with contentious industry issues. Coordinating internal stakeholders, you will gather expert input and develop policy changes that suit the whole business. You will also lead our input into significant UK Government reforms to Energy Code Governance. This role ensures that code modifications align with business requirements, support efficient operation of electricity networks, and enable our Net Zero ambitions.
What You'll Do
* Lead the development of STC & CUSC code modifications, acting as a subject matter expert in commercial codes: answering adhoc queries from wider legal, finance, and/or engineering teams on code governance or connection/transmission charging policy.
* Commission internal modelling and impact analysis to provide evidence-based insights on proposed code modifications and policy changes, ensuring decisions are grounded in robust data.
* Champion the RAPID decision-making framework by coordinating expert input across teams, producing well-evidenced briefings for senior executives, supported by meeting read-outs, modelling and impact analysis, all while maintaining robust records and audit trails which justify our decisions.
* Build influential relationships with external stakeholders and represent NGET at code governance workgroups and forums, negotiating and influencing change to advance our interests.
* Broker alignment across competing internal & external stakeholder views – recognising trade-offs while balancing technical, commercial, and strategic priorities to navigate outcomes which serve the whole business.
* Drive our strategic engagement across UK Government reforms to Energy Code Governance. Being NGET's expert to deepen our understanding of how these reforms will influence our work. Shape our strategy, draft consultation responses, and seek ways to convince others of better outcomes where necessary.
* Support senior colleagues in delivering policy change and managing internal governance forums, ensuring alignment and opportunities throughout the business.
* Contribute to broader initiatives, supporting the advancement of the whole Commercial Strategy team by supporting business planning, and connections or transmission charging.
* Collaborate across the Customer & Network Development teams, through regular corporate contributions.
About You
Technical expertise
* Ability to undertake or commission modelling and impact analysis to inform policy decisions and strengthen evidence-based recommendations.
* Deep understanding of electricity networks, with expertise in the UK commercial model for transmission.
* Knowledge of investment and market signals that shape relationships and decision-making across the electricity sector.
* Some knowledge of connection and transmission charging is helpful.
* Awareness of our licence obligations and contractual responsibilities to key stakeholders, including Government, NESO, and customers (generation and demand).
Strong communicator
* Makes balanced decisions, weighing risks and opportunities without resorting to alarmism or assumptions, and brokers alignment across competing internal views where necessary.
* Drafts clear, concise briefings and advice tailored to diverse, sometimes senior audiences.
* Engages stakeholders effectively and collaborates to resolve blockers and achieve outcomes.
* Distils complex technical issues into plain English, occasionally under tight deadlines.
* Maintains a customer-focused approach, delivering on expectations and helping the business to build trust.
What You'll Get
A competitive salary between £48,000 – £57,000 dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
