The annual Mayor’s Christmas party for Henley’s over 65s was held on Tuesday with 128 local residents and 22 carers enjoying a wonderful afternoon of festivities together.
Henley’s Mayor, councillor Rory Hunt, welcomed his guests to the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the top floor of the town hall building, where tables had been set, adorned with Christmas decorations and goodie bags for all. The eagerly anticipated invitation to all Over 65s went out in November and places were quickly snapped up by individuals or groups from local care homes and other organisations.
After Grace was said by Reverend Jeremy Tayler, a selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones were enjoyed with a glass of wine. Magician, John Ryeland, roamed the tables delighting with magic tricks. The entertainer, a favourite at the Mayor’s party said “It really is a great occasion and a chance to spread a little awe and wonder along with some joy at this time of year. I always love coming along to this event.”
Rupert House Chamber Choir sang a number of Christmas favourites including: Away in a Manger, Walking in a Winter Wonderland, Silent Night, White Christmas and encouraged everyone to sing along withOh Come all Ye Faithful.They finished withWe Wish You a Merry Christmas but offered to sing one last song. A ‘hands-up’ vote was held and the clear winner was Silent Night! Rupert House’s teacher said “It is a pleasure to come and sing for everyone today. We are very proud of all the children at Rupert House school, but especially the Chamber Choir when they sing as beautifully as this.” He went on to wish everyone there a very merry Christmas.
Delfina Cunha, the well-being manager of Huntercombe Care Home said “We came along by taxis because it is so lovely for our residents to have a visit out from the care home. We have really enjoyed it all but have loved the singing – we’ve all been singing along!”
Mayor, councillor Rory Hunt said “It is wonderful to see so many people here today. The hall is absolutely at capacity and so many people have put a lot of effort into organising this event. It’s great to see everyone getting into the festive spirit. I’d like to pay particular thanks to to the Town Hall staff and caterers, Time for Tea, who catered for the event as well as the volunteers. Rupert house school choir came on and sang so beautifully – what a way to round off their 100th year! Thanks also to entertainers Chris Rae and John Ryeland – I really hope that everyone has a very merry Christmas.”
Pat Crisp and friend Audrey, from Western Road and Vicarage Road in Henley, have been coming along for many years. Pat explained “I look forward to this all year and as soon as the invite comes out I put my name down! My parents used to come and it’s great. We get to meet up with friends and have lots of fun – I can’t even pick a best bit, it’s all so good!”
Joan Mills, a first time party-goer at 96 years young, said, “I’ve recently joined the Over 60s club and heard about this. Henley really do look after their elderly very well. Maureen and I loved the singing and are really looking forward to a bit of Bingo and a sherry!”
After the raffle, with prizes from over 20 local shops and individuals, was drawn, Mr Chris Rae performed a finale of musical entertainment. The party was brought to a close and transport organised for those who needed it by Annie Lathaen. The event was also supported by The Henley Handybus which was on hand to take some of the guests home.
