Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine 80:20 SARC

Emergency Department 80:20% Clinical Fellow Post - SARC

Bristol Royal Infirmary Emergency Department offers SARC based clinical fellow jobs, 80% time working in the Adult ED and 20% SARC.

This role would suit those with an interest in paediatrics, adolescent healthcare, sexual health, mental health, safeguarding or emergency medicine. You will have the opportunity to work in a regional sexual assault referral centre (SARC) within a small patient focused team.

You will learn about forensic medicine, its application in the context of sexual offences and the interface with the criminal justice system and become expert communicators and learn more about the trauma informed care of children, young people and vulnerable adults who have been sexually abused, raped or sexually assaulted.

Develop skills and knowledge about the immediate health, wellbeing, safeguarding and forensic needs of people who have been sexually abused, raped or sexually assaulted including emergency contraception, sexual health screening, PEPSE and risk assessments for self-harm and suicide.


Main duties of the job

The post will be a combination of service provision including out of hours and paid time to develop a specialist interest. The candidate to combine a job in Emergency Medicine with a 20% time allowance for a specialist interest. Specialist interests may include but are not limited to education (SIM/FOAMed), global health, expedition medicine, leadership and management, advanced airway management, research (with Professor Jonathon Benger), ultrasound, resuscitation, toxicology and paediatrics. If an applicant has a particular specialist interest they would like to pursue not listed above then we will accommodate. Open to trainees and non-trainees. For those trainees who already have a UK National Training Number in Emergency Medicine, these posts are eligible for OOPT or OOPE.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

The reception, diagnosis and emergency treatment of patients presenting to the adult Emergency Department. The successful candidate will be given supervision and support from senior medical staff to develop competency in the autonomous clinical management of these patients whilst ensuring patient safety. This post is based in the adult Emergency Department and no sessions will be undertaken in the paediatric Emergency Department.

There is close liaison between ED and ICU at BRI. Patients referred to Specialist Units within the hospital are the responsibility of that specialist team, who will see the patient in the Emergency Department and arrange appropriate care. However, medical and nursing staff in the ED are responsible for any emergency care necessary. This shared care is seamless and collaborative.

Managerial

The management responsibility of the post holder will be to the Clinical Director who is responsible to the Chief Executive and Trust Board.

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

The post holder must be aware of clinical governance and clinical risk management and take an active part in their implementation, including audit. Clinical audit is established at the BRI. They will participate in at least one supervised audit project during the 12 month post and will be encouraged to attend interdisciplinary clinical governance meetings

On-Call Commitment

In ED the roster is a full shift system. Shifts are a balanced mix of earlies, mids, lates, and nights. The posts pay will be calculated by HR and will be compliant with the new regulations set in Aug 2017.


Person Specification


Education and Qualifications

* Registered with General Medical Council (UK)
* At least 24 months full-time hospital service as a trainee in the Foundation Medicine and a further 36 months full time equivalent hospital work (ideally EM based). No unexplained career gaps
* Advanced Life Support provider
* Previous experience of working in critical care in the British Healthcare system (not observing)
* Specialist Interest intent and evidence of interest
* Previous Anaesthetic experience - ideally with RCoA basic sign off.
* Intermediate EM/ MRCP/MRCS (Part 1) or equivalent
* Other membership, fellowship or diplomas


Knowledge and Experience

* Able to assess, resuscitate and stabilise acutely sick patients
* Able to participate as key member of cardiac arrest team
* Demonstrates good clinical judgement
* Completed specialist skills courses (e.g. difficult airways, ATLS/APLS, ultrasound course, etc)
* Understands audit and governance processes
* Designed and / or completed audits
