Assistant Survey Manager
Location: Plymouth – Devon
Hours: 42.5 hours per week (08:00 – 17:00)
Reporting Into: Engineering Survey Manager
Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Assistant Survey Manager to support the delivery of a major redevelopment project within a secure and regulated environment in Plymouth.
This role will support the Engineering Survey Manager in coordinating and delivering site surveying activities across multiple work areas. The position involves managing survey teams, ensuring high standards of data accuracy, supporting QA/QC compliance, and maintaining alignment with project specifications and industry standards. The successful candidate will have experience leading civil engineering or surveying teams and a strong understanding of operating under QC1 procedures.
Due to the sensitive nature of the project, security clearance will be required.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist the Survey Manager in coordinating and managing all site surveying activities, supporting a growing team of surveyors and survey technicians
• Maintain survey control networks across multiple independent construction work areas
• Manage prism and scanning multi-instrument automated total station (ATS) networks using Leica GeoMoS
• Oversee manual monitoring programmes to report structural or surface level movements
• Establish and maintain machine control systems for excavation and dowel drilling (TPS)
• Carry out as-built scanning of existing structures and process point clouds to validate design models
• Conduct demolition scanning for as-built records and conformity checks
• Undertake quality assurance surveys for reinforced concrete works, including pre-pour and post-pour checks
• Deliver as-built surveys using laser scanning and point cloud modelling
• Ensure survey data is collected, recorded, and stored accurately in line with QA/QC standards
• Support preparation and checking of survey reports, drawings, and data outputs for engineering and construction teams
• Oversee survey equipment management, ensuring calibration and operational functionality
• Coordinate with site engineers, supervisors, and subcontractors to align survey operations with programme requirements
• Support implementation of QC1 procedures, maintaining high standards of traceability, tolerances, and reporting
• Manage and archive survey documentation within the project document management system to support compliance and audits
• Attend daily briefings and provide updates on survey progress, constraints, and risks
• Ensure all surveying activities comply with health, safety, environmental regulations and project requirements

Candidate Requirements
• Degree, diploma, or relevant qualification in Civil Engineering, Surveying, or Construction
• Significant experience within surveying on civil engineering projects
• 3–5 years’ experience in a senior surveying or assistant survey management role
• Experience managing or supervising survey teams on site
• Strong understanding of QC1 procedures and quality documentation within a civil engineering context
• Proficient in total stations, GPS/GNSS, laser scanning and associated data processing software (e.g. AutoCAD Civil 3D, Leica Infinity, Leica Cyclone, Leica 3DR)
• Strong attention to detail and organisational capability
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• CSCS Card
• SMSTS or SSSTS preferred
• Member of CInstCES (or working towards membership) or equivalent professional body
• Ability to work under pressure and meet programme deadlines
Desirable
• Experience on major infrastructure or utilities projects such as highways, rail, water, energy or nuclear
• Knowledge of BIM or digital construction processes
• First Aid and additional safety certifications

• BPSS clearance required (process may take up to 8 weeks)
• Candidates must hold a passport from a NATO or MISWG member country
• Candidates must have resided in the UK for the past 5 years
