Senior Control & Instrumentation Engineer
The salary for this role is £56,596 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected; however, hybrid working can be discussed depending on business needs.
This role is based at the following site: Culham, Oxfordshire.
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including checks by the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.
The Role
We’re seeking a Senior Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer to join our team in advancing fusion energy. You will lead the design, development, and delivery of control and safety systems for our innovative facilities.
You will manage complex work packages from conception to commissioning, solve technical challenges, respond to plant faults, and ensure safety and robustness. Additionally, you will oversee technical studies, produce documentation, and supervise staff and contractors on major projects.
This role requires excellent communication and influencing skills for effective collaboration, workload management, and problem-solving in a high-tech environment.

Key Accountabilities:
* Lead and deliver C&I projects from concept to detailed design, including enhancement programs and future fusion systems, ensuring safety, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness.
* Take technical ownership of control and safety systems, including installation, software development, testing, commissioning, and maintenance.
* Develop technical documentation and software, including system architecture, control philosophies, and coding in platforms such as Siemens TIA S7, PCS7, LabVIEW, ABB 800xA, Python, and C++.
* Collaborate across disciplines to gather requirements, perform HAZOP assessments, lead design reviews, and guide solutions through the project lifecycle.
* Supervise teams and ensure compliance, overseeing contractors, authorising electrical work, managing milestones, and maintaining safety and quality standards.
The package includes a salary of £56,596 (inclusive of Specialist Allowance) plus benefits such as an outstanding pension scheme.
* A degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent, with relevant experience, or an HND with extensive experience.
Required skills include:
* Practical knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems, EC&I documentation, and safety procedures.
* Experience in designing, installing, and testing Control and Instrumentation systems.
* Chartered Engineer status and safety qualifications (e.g., TÜV Rheinland FSEng).
* Experience with Siemens, LabVIEW, ABB 800xA, or similar systems.
