Are you a socially engaged artist passionate about co-creation and community celebration? We’re looking for an Artist in Residence to work alongside schools and community groups to co-create bold, beautiful banners that will take to the streets in October 2025.
Job Description
We are recruiting an artist, creative practitioner or arts organisation with a socially engaged practice to co-create artwork for a banner parade in Woodrow, Redditch. The successful practitioner(s) will determine, with the project's steering group, a creative vision for a celebration that everyone in Woodrow can be a part of. In practice, the individual, collective or organisation will design and deliver workshops with schools and communities to co-create the banners for the parade. This commission builds on a parade piloted in December 2024 as part of the Love Woodrow project, and we are excited by the evolution of this work. We are therefore interested in hearing from artists whose practice is located in (but not limited to) the fields of: banner making; artivism; textiles; sewing; printmaking; sign painting. We aim to work with around 10 community groups or schools identified by the steering group on a full-time basis over a 6-week period. The finished banners must include positive messaging that is appropriate for a public parade, relevant to the local community, and in line with Reimagine Redditch's values and behaviours.
The successful artist will have the following skills and experience: Essential: A good understanding of the history of banner-making and a range of different techniques; a flexible and inclusive approach to co-creation; excellent group facilitation skills that provide structure and promote shared ownership and participation for all; experience and skill of working with communities least engaged in arts and culture; experience of designing and delivering workshops with a range of ages and abilities; commitment to data gathering and reflection for evaluation purposes Desirable: Experience of co-curating a banner parade; experience of working on a place-based project; 3+ years experience of delivering co-created workshops; experience of evaluating co-created projects. Access to a car is recommended.

The fee for this commission is £6,000 and includes travel, subsistence, delivery and workshop materials. The fee is inclusive of VAT.

This should outline how you meet the criteria and: how you would approach this commission; an explanation of what community activism and co-creation means to you; relevant experience of delivering co-creation and community projects; an outline budget and timeline; confirmation that you will be prepared to complete a method statement and risk assessment before starting work; your contact details; contact details of at least one referee.
