About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Seat Systems Software Certification Engineer based in Bristol, United Kingdom, to support the growing BCA Seats Statement of Work (SOW). The role involves certifying and delivering safe and reliable airborne software components for seat‑related embedded systems, in collaboration with suppliers and global Boeing sites.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the software certification strategy and execution for seat‑related embedded systems, including seat controllers, motors, occupant sensors, and integrated cabin control interfaces.
* Act as the primary technical authority for DO‑178C/ED‑12C‑based certification efforts and coordinate cross‑functional and supplier activities to achieve regulatory approvals.
* Mentor junior engineers, drive process improvements, and represent Boeing in regulatory reviews and supplier negotiations.
* Review suppliers’ software lifecycle data (architecture, design, requirement, verification and validation documents) throughout the software lifecycle.
* Oversee supplier software development and lifecycle processes, conduct supplier audits and assessments, and ensure deliverables meet Boeing standards and regulatory expectations.
* Verify compliance preparation and submission of technical documentation required for certification.
* Collaborate transparently with regulatory representatives, Boeing EUMs, suppliers and global Boeing sites to ensure all systems and software designs meet regulatory and internal standards.
* Prepare and maintain certification packages and software compliance documentation submitted to certification authorities; respond to technical inquiries and auditor requests.
* Develop, document and maintain architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
* Automate the certification process where possible.
* Provide subject‑matter expertise during certification reviews, design reviews, regulator meetings; travel to supplier sites, test labs and regulator sessions as needed.
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor of Science degree or higher in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
* Ability to obtain security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
* 10+ years of experience applying RTCA DO‑178(B/C/D) Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification for embedded software.
* 5+ years of experience with software lifecycle data items and standards such as DO‑330 and DO‑331.
* Experience leading software safety analyses (SW FMEA, SW contribution to FHA/SHA) and supporting system safety cases.
* Proficiency in preparing, presenting and defending certification artifacts to internal Boeing authorities and external regulators (FAA/EASA/CAAC).
* Proven experience leading supplier oversight, audits and resolving supplier‑supplied software issues.
* Strong background in real‑time embedded software, RTOS, device drivers and HW‑SW integration for avionics ECUs.
* Excellent technical writing and oral presentation skills for regulatory submissions and reviews.
* Knowledge of DO‑254 (FPGA/ASIC) interactions for custom hardware in seat controllers.
* Experience driving improvements to certification processes, templates, automation and tools; mentoring junior certification engineers.
* Experience managing schedule, risk and stakeholder expectations for certification milestones.
* Familiarity with Boeing processes, specifications or prior OEM certification experience.
* Proficiency with version control tools such as Git and Agile planning tools such as JIRA or GitLab.
Working Conditions
Hybrid role with approximately three days working from the office in Bristol, UK. Travel up to 25% of working time to collaborate with stakeholders, suppliers and regulators within the UK and internationally.
