Thesuccessful applicant should possess FRCS (Tr & Orth) or FRCS (Neurosurgery)and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admittedto the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within theUK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy MedicalDirector and Clinical Director.
Applicantsshould have established skills in complex spinal surgery including at least oneyear of dedicated complex spinal fellowship training. Excellent communicationand team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and servicedevelopment are essential.

Main duties of the job
Thispost will deliver 10PAs as part of the Spinal Surgery team with a full timecommitment to complex spinal surgery. Acute responsibilities will includetaking part in a 1:12 spinal only on-call rota. The elective practice willfocus on complex spinal surgery only. Candidates are expected to haveexperience of all facets of spinal surgery and have undertaken dedicated postCCT training in complex spinal surgery. There will be opportunities tocontribute to teaching and research.
About us
Thepost will be based at Leeds General Infirmary. The Spinal Surgery departmentwas created in 1997 following the centralisation of services from acrossLeeds and Wakefield. The two groups of spinal surgeons were amalgamated in2006 and a full spinal on call rota instituted in 2013. Spinal surgicalpatients are now co-located on the same wards at the Leeds General Infirmary,providing a highest standard secondary and tertiary centre serving apopulation of approximately 2.5 million people.

Job responsibilities
OBJECTIVESOF THE POST
Todeliver care to patients who require spinal surgical interventions at the LGIsite:
Supervision of patients
Care of in-patients on a SpinalSurgery rota with an on call frequency of 1:12.
Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings
Tolink with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teamswithin the spinal team and across the spinal surgery service.
Towork with colleagues in Spinal surgery to deliver the acute spinal on call(on the Spinal rota with an on-call frequency of 1 in 12). This includes bothout-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal workinghours.
Tocontribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Spinalsurgery service. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate andcontribute to the current clinical research programs on going in thedepartment.
REQUIREMENTSOF THE POST
3.1 General Training and Qualifications
The appointee must holdaccreditation in FRCS (Tr & Orth) or FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalentand have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently ina training programme within the UK.
Applicantsmust be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted tothe Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UKor have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Directorand Clinical Director.
Applicantsmust provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevantRoyal College at the time of application, in order for their application tobe progressed further.
Experience
Theappointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience andcompetence in all aspects of spinal surgery and appropriate experience incomplex spinal surgery. The postholder will deliver the regional on callSpinal surgery service. The postholder will be expected to deliver adultSpinal surgery work both complex and non-complex.

Theappointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take thelead in the following:
Mortality and morbidity meetings;
Development and application ofagreed clinical guidelines.
Thisis to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as asupporting programmed activity. Itwould be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendanceat the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance wouldbe recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).
Inthe discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected tomaintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriatecontinuing medical education.
TEACHING
TheTrust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with theUniversity of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching andall Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriatecontribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.
Thepost-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teachingprogramme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organisedon a speciality or clinical area basis.
Thepost-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues todeliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trustcontract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.
Theappointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to theteaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs inTrauma & Orthopaedics in the Local Education and Training Board.

TheSpinal Unit is supported by four senior interface spinal fellows and threejunior spinal fellows plus 4 T&O registrars and 8 FY1 doctors. There are9 StRs within neurosurgery and 11 SHO grade staff. These rotate through thespinal service during their training. The wards are also supported byAdvanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs).
Thereare 9 Neurosurgical consultants who also have an elective spinal surgerypractice alongside their neurosurgical practice.
Fouradult Clinical Nurse Specialists (Katrina McMillan, Emma Madden, Vikki Wardand Joanne Winter) bridge the ward discharges and post-op follow-up care inaddition to supplying patient information/support and help during in-patientstay for all adult spinal admissions. There is a paediatric Clinical NurseSpecialist (Laura Sharlotte) who bridges the ward discharges and post-opfollow-up care in addition to supplying patient information/support and helpduring in-patient stay for all paediatric spinal admissions

Qualifications
* FRCS (Tr & Orth) or FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent.
* Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
Clinical Experience and Career Progression
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
* Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
* Attendance at recognised management course
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops

* Is up to date and fit to practise safely
* Should have completed a recognised training programme within the UK or equivalent abroad in Orthopaedics or Neurosurgery.
